Doreen Mary Florence Bertha Burling passed away peacefully on July 17th 2024 at 12:21 pm surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and light.
Doreen was born September 15, 1938, in Beaver Crossing, Alberta. Doreen was the eldest of 10 children born to her loving parents, Eva and Joseph Desjarlais.
Doreen faced life’s challenges with courage from a young age. At seven years old, she spent almost a year far away from home in the Charles Camsell Hospital battling tuberculosis, and not many years later, she moved away from home to attend school. These early separations from her family shaped her into the strong and independent woman her family and friends knew and loved.
In 1958, Doreen met her husband, Allan at a diner where she worked. Their love quickly blossomed, leading to marriage and the birth of their five children: Paul (Deb), Michael (Luwam), John (Maria), Shannon, and Shauna (Donny). Doreen’s family continued to grow with her beloved grandchildren: Charity, Lindsay, Faron, Derek, Bryce, Gaby, Bayron, Drakmar, Paul, Sofia, Barbara, John, Ashley Jayden, and Jacey, and 8 cherished great-grandchildren.
Doreen was a vibrant member of the Fort Saskatchewan community. Her involvement with the Ladies Legion Auxiliary Association, volunteering at the Pioneer House, and participation in various committees, including the Red Hat Society, showcased her dedication to serving others. Her competitive spirit shone brightly in her love for card games, particularly crib, where she often secured a top spot. Doreen’s passion for card games carried on into her last days.
Music and dancing and her grandchildren brought immense joy to Doreen’s life. Known for her humor and quick wit, Doreen could always be counted on to bring a smile to those around her. She had an amazing ability to connect with people, leaving a lasting light and impression on everyone she encountered.
Doreen was more than just a Daughter, Mother, Grandmother, Auntie and Friend; she was a gentle Angel, a source of comfort and support and unconditional love. Her selflessness knew no bounds, always giving more than she received. Whether it was a listening ear or a soothing hug, Doreen’s nurturing spirit was a constant presence in the lives of her loved ones.
Doreen will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Doreen is predeceased by her parents, Eva (1980) & Joseph (2002), her brothers, Howard (1997) & Dale (2018), her sister, Bertha (2023) and her husband Allan (2008)
Doreen’s celebration of her wonderful life will be at the Fort Saskatchewan Legion #27 in the Normandy Room at 1pm on July 29th, 2024.
