Obituary for
David Ryan
December 16, 1971 – May 4, 2024
John David Joseph Ryan passed away at the age of 52, following a long health battle complicated by the extremely rare Churg Strauss (EGPA) syndrome. He is now at peace and his indomitable strength to battle on for his family and friends is carried on in them, having witnessed his daily sacrifices as an example of a life well-lived and filled with love.
David was husband to Janice (Boudreau) and father to sons Douglas and Ean. They mourn his loss, while carrying on his name, love and memory knowing the strength he shared is in them. They are grateful for the support of Janice’s parents’ Doug and Kathy Boudreau, and her sisters Ashley, Carol, Cheryl, and Sandra, along with the extended Boudreau family.
David was son to John and Elianne (Barrette), devoted brother to Michele (Joe Calderella), Pam (Paul Ang), Peter (Caitlin Tighe) and Kate, and uncle to nieces Rebecca Berretti and Gemma Caldarella, and nephew Joe Jr. Caldarella.
His enduring pride and top priority was always his family and friends. The family grieves with a list of friends too long to compose here, but the chosen family members of James Doiron and Ryan Sharp are thanked for their endless loyalty and help. No one could ask for better friends.
David lived and loved big. He had numerous passions, which was evident in his varied careers over the years – ranging from wine connoisseur, restaurateur, cook, a five-year stint in the Canadian Armed Forces Artillery Reserve as a Bombardier, red seal baker (who baked a cake for the Queen’s jubilee and visit to Edmonton), local radio personality (“Trucker Dave”) to double-trailer trucker, just to name a few. His mischievous smile, charisma and easy going, unfiltered nature was as real as a person could be, to an incomparable degree. What you saw is what you got in Dave. He shared his love of great music, hockey, and a good time with anyone willing to listen or participate.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation’s “Every Kid Deserves a Shot” or a charity of your choosing. The family asks for privacy at this time.
