David Lawrence “Larry”, a cherished husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully in Edmonton after a courageous battle with ALS.
Larry was the youngest of 5 sons born to Frank and Bessie Heron – Frank Jr., John, Robert, Gordon and Larry. Frank and Bessie established a summer cottage at Alberta Beach early in the 1930’s and instilled a love of the lake in the Heron boys and subsequent generations.
Larry attended Eastglen High School where he met the love of his life, Doreen. Married for 63 years, Larry and Doreen exemplified true love – always holding hands, always saying I love you, and cherishing one another. They had 3 children, Lori, Graham (Carrie), and Tracy Beck (Nick); 8 grandchildren: Abigail, Torrie, Jeff (Noelle), Justin, Jessica, Ian, Evan, and Paige; 9 great-grandchildren; and a large extended family of nieces and nephews.
Larry’s life was marked by his unwavering optimism, infectious humor, and profound love for his family. Larry was a well-known figure in the Edmonton business community as the founder of Heron Siegel Insurance and Direct Line Insurance. His leadership extended beyond his business endeavors as he served as the President of the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta (IBAA) and dedicated himself to the service of others as a proud Shriner. He was also an active member of the Shrine Motor Corps.
Beyond his professional and philanthropic contributions, Larry was a man who cherished life’s simple pleasures. He loved the lake where many family memories were made and he was the life of happy hour. Larry’s zest for life shone brightly during his winters in Arizona and his fondness for golf. He and Doreen embraced the snowbird community and in turn cultivated many new friends. Larry’s keen sense of humor, piercing blue eyes and radio voice were his trademark. In keeping with his optimistic nature, Larry’s philosophy on life can best be encapsulated in his phrase, “Attitude is Everything”. Despite the challenges of the past months Larry continued to embody this philosophy, endearing him to his caregivers. This sentiment was reflected in every aspect of his life.
Larry’s legacy is not only in the successful ventures but also in the laughter, love and light he brought into the world. His memory will continue to be a beacon of joy and a source of comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the power of positivity and the enduring strength of family bonds. Larry will be profoundly missed by all.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the New Year. To be added to the guest list please email: larryheroncelebration@yahoo.com.
In lieu of flowers it was Larry’s wish that donations be sent to ALS Society, Pilgrims Hospice, both of which provided immeasurable support and comfort to our family, or to Al Shamal Shrine Centre.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Edmonton South Chapel.
