Brian Christopher Powder
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Brian Christopher Powder on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at the age of 35 years.
Brian is survived by his children, Darius Powder, Athena Powder and Roman Powder; mother, Alice Powder; and siblings, Jennifer, Jessica, Leah and Reah Cardinal; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Brian Powder; sister, Stephanie Powder; and brother, Raymond Powder.
Brian “Northside Smilez” was an upcoming indigenous rapper in Edmonton. He performed many shows about giving back to the streets while working closely with his community, often focusing themes around mental health services.
Northside Smilez was a powerful voice in the hip-hop scene, coming from the dark streets of Edmonton’s Northside. Born into poverty, he grew up surrounded by the struggles of the inner city, with the corruption of police services and child services, keeping family and friends together while fighting the system.
Northside Smilez found expression in music, to express the pain, anger, and frustration that came with living in a system designed to hold him back. Through every fight fought against his demons, music was always his passion with many performances he did around the city to uplift parts of our city and community.
Through his music, Northside Smilez aimed to inspire change, challenge the status quo, and bring hope to those who need it most. He is a true representative of the hood, a voice for the voiceless, and a reminder that no matter where you come from, you have the power to create a better future for yourself and your community. ~ SMILE4ME ~
A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, November 18, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, 10821 – 96 Street, Edmonton with interment in Northern Lights Cemetery.
