When we think of Azelie Jane (Herring-Cooper) Schmidt, there’s so many words that could be used to describe her including sister, mother, auntie, grandmother, and friend, but then there’s others like daughter of the Most High, encourager, peacemaker, hostess extraordinaire, mentor, & relationship mender. For some she was the calm in their storm.
Jane’s mother, Florence, was from Boston and her father, Charlie, was from the north. Two very different cultures merged to create the Herring Cooper family in 1928. Mom was born in 1936, joining Barney aged 5 and sister, Katie aged 3 with Bonnie completing the family in 1947.
Growing up, the Canadian government moved the family from Wood Buffalo National Park to Jasper National Park, then Yellowknife and finally settling in Edmonton.
Jane spent much of her working career at Air Canada where she met her future husband Bill who worked just down the road at Healy Ford. They wed in 1964 and enjoyed a marvellous life in Edmonton and Spruce Grove..
Bill’s daughter Judy led the way and Jeannine and Colin arrived in 1970 & 1971. Jane flourished at being a grandmother, and her grandchildren adored her. Judy’s children Jamie and Lindsay were first to call Jane Grandma. Following 24 years later, were Abigail, Ella, Hugo, Thor and Enzo and shortly after were Lindsay’s three children, Harper, Hayden and Sutton, making Jane a Great Grandma.
Jane and Bill’s faith and ministry began when they moved to Spruce Grove in the 70’s and started attending Parkland Baptist Church. Jane developed her gifts of mercy and hospitality and welcomed any and all into both the church as well as their lives. She was the original “Build a longer table, not a higher fence” woman.
Survived by sister, Bonnie Herring Cooper; daughters: Judy Wegner, Jeannine Mallett (Trevor) and son Colin Schmidt (Katherine); grandchildren: Jamie Wegner (Sherry), Lindsay Turnbull (Kevin), Abigail Mallett, Ella-Jayne Schmidt, Hugo Schmidt, Thor Schmidt, Enzo Schmidt; and great-grandchildren: Harper Turnbull, Hayden Turnbull, Sutton Turnbull. Jane is predeceased by her loving husband Bill, parents Charles and Florence; siblings, Barney, Katie and son in law, Richard Wegner.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, Dec 19, 2024, at Parkland Baptist Church, Spruce Grove, AB.
