Albert Benjamin James, born on February 19, 1930, in Vegreville, Alberta, passed away on December 18, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Al is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Adrienne James, and their four children: Robert (Gloria), Leanne, Laurie (Jim), and Theresa (Ric). He was a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren: Lesley, Erin, Dan, Sarah, Jeremy, Mason, and Stephanie. He was a great-grandfather to one great-granddaughter, Adrianna.
Al dedicated nearly 20 years of his life to the service station business, owning and operating three Esso service stations where he gained a reputation for good quality workmanship and service to his customers. The last part of his career included a mowing business for well sites in the Edmonton Area. Known for his industrious and engineering spirit, Albert took great pride in his ability to fix and improvise anything that needed repair. That included a continuous passive motion machine for healing Adrienne’s knee and various other inventions for camping and use around the house. He once moved their cottage at Seba Beach 20 feet completely by himself. He also had an amazing talent for crafting beautiful lamps from diamond willow.
An avid outdoorsman, Al cherished time spent in nature, whether it was hunting in the fall, exploring the wilderness with his wife, Adrienne, and family or his close friends, Bruce Vincent and Don Campbell, or spending weekends at his beloved farm near Hondo. He enjoyed skiing during winter months and taking thrilling adventures with his Jeep, dune buggy, quad, and snow machine, often creating memorable moments in the heart of the Coal Branch. He nourished a lifelong love of birds of all types. In later life he loved to feed and watch his birds in their backyard in Virginia Park in Edmonton.
Al will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, family, and the great outdoors will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Connelly-McKinley Downtown Funeral Home.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Downtown Chapel.
