Brothers and sisters, we are gathered here today not in sorrow, but in celebration, for the Lord called home a mighty woman of faith, Agnes “Nette” Wong, on the 21st of November in the year of our Lord 2024. Born on the 17th of March in 1958, in the serene town of Seria, Brunei, Agnes was a beacon of light that shone brightly across continents, touching many lives before her peaceful passing in Edmonton, Canada.
Agnes was the cherished daughter of Elen Juki and Henry Toyad, both of whom had gone on before her, leaving a legacy of love and strength. She was a beloved sister to Policarp, Florentius, Richard, Lily (Mary), Bernadine, and Philomena Toyad. In her journey through life, she found her soulmate in Peter Wong, and together they cultivated a garden of love with their children, Charissa (Kevin) Chung, Celia (Tony) Chang, and Mathew (Adelaide) Wong. Each branch of her family tree blossomed with the virtues she so effortlessly embodied.
A woman of intellect and dedication, Agnes pursued her education in Payroll Administration at NAIT, which propelled her to a fulfilling career as a Payroll Specialist at the United Nurses of Alberta. Her work was more than a job; it was a ministry through which she served with diligence and compassion. Agnes also committed herself to a higher calling by taking her final Carmelite vows with the Order of Discalced Carmelites Secular (OCDS), enriching her faith and the faith of those around her.
Agnes lived a life brimming with activity and joy. She found solace in the simple pleasures of life—long walks in the embrace of nature, the challenge of weights, the thrill of badminton and pickleball. She was a globetrotter at heart, with a passion for exploring new horizons and savoring a wide variety of different (“sugar-free” LOL) foods. Her spirit was nourished through prayer, reading, and regular attendance at mass, where she was a testament to the love of Jesus.
Her hobbies were as vibrant and diverse as her personality—coloring the world with her art, strategizing over card and board games, and indulging in the occasional shopping spree. Agnes was a woman who lived out the Gospel in action, always ready to lend a helping hand, and was a vessel of the love of Jesus to everyone she encountered.
In the words of the great Saint Teresa of Avila, “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.” Agnes embodied this truth in her daily walk, steadfast in the face of life’s fleeting trials, her faith unshakeable as the rock of ages.
She was loving, faith-filled, and thoughtful – words that only begin to describe the profound impact she had on those blessed to know her. Agnes Wong was a testament to the grace of God, a living sermon that preached love, compassion, and the joy of the Lord in every action.
As we bid farewell to Agnes, we do not despair, for we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. She ran the good race, she fought the good fight, and now she rests in the eternal embrace of our Savior. We will carry her memory in our hearts until that glorious day when we shall meet again on the golden shores of Heaven.
Rejoice, for Agnes “Nette” Wong has found her way home. May her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
