Darlene “Granny” Ann Umbach
June 2, 1947 – January 6, 2024
We regret to announce the passing of our mother, Darlene Umbach of Tomahawk, Alberta at Drayton Valley Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at the age of 76 years.
Granny, as she was affectionately known, was a great sports fan, and especially loved to cheer on the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Blue Jays. Her favorite pastime was playing Bingo, and was sure to make her rounds from Spruce Grove to Wildwood to yell out “BINGO”! For several years, Granny spent her summers parked near the Berrymoor Bridge, camping along the North Saskatchewan River; taking in all that nature had to offer. What made all of these things so special was the ability to do them with her children and family. With an immense love for children, their presence brought her incredible joy.
Darlene will be lovingly remembered by her children, Tracy Smerychynski, Dale (Theresa) Umbach and Dena Umbach; grandchildren, David, Travis, Heather (Jesse), Ilana and Katelyn; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Mason, Brianna, Cecilia, Ariana and Lillian; as well as by her longest and dearest friend, Alice Johnson of Three Hills, many life-long friends and the many friendships made down at the river.
Darlene was predeceased by her husband, Merle and parents, Florence and Willard.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Doctors, Nurses and all support staff of Drayton Valley and Red Deer hospitals and Dialysis Units for the incredible care and compassion shown to Granny and the entire family throughout her illness and stay.
