Long time Canmore resident and beloved brother, brother-in-law, uncle and good friend Frederick David Thompson passed away peacefully at the Wetaskiwin hospital long term care facility.
Fred was born in St. Stephens, New Brunswick, the sixth of nine children born to parents Harry and Hilda Thompson. Fred is survived by his sisters in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fred was predeceased by his father Harry, mother Hilda, sister Margaret Thompson, brother Arthur Thompson, sister Mary Smith, brother John “Jack” Thompson, brother Harry Thompson, brother Ken Thompson, brother Bill Thompson, brother Al Thompson and sister in-law Bonny Thompson.
Fred developed a good work ethic at a very young age while growing up on the family farm in New Brunswick. After graduating early from high school, Fred went to secondary school for a semester. He then moved out west in 1954 where he went through the apprenticeship program to become a bricklayer/stone mason.
Fred and his two brothers Harry and Jack started Thompson Masonry in Canmore Alberta. The “Thompson Boys”, worked very long and hard hours doing fine stone & brick work on many buildings in the Bow Valley that can be seen still today.
After a career of bricklaying in the Bow Valley Fred retired at 65 and moved to Pigeon Lake, Alberta where he enjoyed his retirement on his farm with his brother Harry Thompson.
