Frank Melvin Kupka
(September 25, 1939 – August 4, 2024)
We are deeply saddened to share the loss of our beloved husband, father, grandpa and friend, Frank Melvin Kupka, who passed away August 4, 2024 at the age of 84 years old. Frank was born in Thorsby, Alberta on September 25, 1939 to John and Katie Kupka. They left several months later to the place he would spend his entire life, Camrose, Alberta. Frank’s family included a brother, William, and sisters, Sophia, Eleanor, Annie and Doris. Growing up, some of his interests were fishing with his dad and an interest in automobiles, which led him to join a car club.
Frank left school early on and found work at Camrose Transport. He was soon driving transport trucks and after a few years found himself at Highway 13 Transport. It was during this time that Frank met Gladys (Schlaut) and in 1961, they were married. They raised four children together; Sherrill, Susanne, Nicole and Colin. Frank left the trucking industry for a while and after owning a gas station, went to work at Crawfords as a yardman. He stayed in this position while his family grew older but then returned to the occupation he loved, trucking. He made many stops and many friends on highway 13, east of Camrose.
He greatly loved camping, mostly because it included family and fishing. He taught his children the patience and art of fishing and loved the family gatherings with all the extended family. In later years, as the family expanded, he was a welcoming voice. When that doorbell rang, he would often yell “Nobody’s home”, and you just knew you were welcome. His role soon changed to grandpa, and he did not disappoint. His grandchildren have fond memories of Frank, be it fishing, being captured for a hug, or his teasing each one in a unique way. His love of fun really shone with his grandchildren, and brought a smile to anyone watching. Frank was known for being a good bowler and has won many championships. He loved playing cards, especially if he could beat his grandchildren. He enjoyed dancing with his wife, cooking and loved to socialize.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Gladys, of 62 years; his children Sherrill (Lorne) Klevgaard, Susanne (Todd) Trombley, Nicole (Paul) DeBoon and Colin Kupka; grandchildren Paulina Klevgaard, Jessica (Guy) Becker, Austin (Jess) Klevgaard, Justin Trombley (Liv Taylor), Kayley Trombley (Jordan Breitkreutz), Courtney Klevgaard, Jenna DeBoon, Kase DeBoon, Brooke Kupka, and Jake Kupka; great-grandson Rhodes Klevgaard; as well as many extended family members and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Annie and Doris.
A Funeral Mass was held at 11:15 a.m., Friday, August 9, 2024, at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 3605 50 St Camrose, with Fr. Danial DSouza as the celebrant.
If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Frank’s memory may be made to Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation or to the charity of one’s choice.
