Soula Sotiropoulos Obituary
It is with deep sadness and broken hearts, that we announce the passing of our dearest Athanasia in Calgary on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the age of seventy, surrounded by her family.
Left to mourn the loss is her husband of 49 years, Elias and children: Vasiliki (Constantinos), Constantina (Costas) and Chris (Angela), grandchildren: Constantinos, Elias, Athanasios, Eli (York), Liv and Evangelia, as well as siblings, extended family, and countless friends.
Athanasia was born in 1953 in Livartzi, Greece, the youngest of seven siblings. She joins her parents Ioannis and Constandina Daeres, her sister Vasiliki, and brothers-in-law Demetrios and Demetrios, who all predeceased her into God’s love.
She made the brave decision to immigrate to Canada in 1970 at the youthful age of 17 and initially settled in Saint John, New Brunswick. There she met Elias and in 1975 they were married. They were eager to start their family, first having their daughter Vasiliki and then Constantina while in New Brunswick. Later making yet another bold decision to move to Calgary in 1979, where they added Chris to their family and remained until the present.
Soula, loving wife and mom was the heart and soul of her family. After raising her own children she took immense pride in selflessly supporting them as Yiayia to each of her grandchildren.
She was also giving of her time and took considerable pride in serving the Greek Church, community, and her friends in various capacities. She had boundless joy helping people as well as welcoming them into her home with generous hospitality.
She was a devout Orthodox Christian. Shortly before her passing, she observed the Divine Liturgy. Her relationship with God gave her strength in challenging times and gives us comfort that her soul is at peace and in its rightful place with God.
Her kindness and thoughtfulness knew no bounds. In her last days, her greatest concern was not for herself, but the wellbeing of the loved ones that she would leave behind. We are forever thankful to have her as the brightest example of warmth and love in our lives.
Prayer Service to be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (1 Tamarac Crescent SW) on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Service to be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (1 Tamarac Crescent SW) on Thursday, July 4, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery (3219 4 Street NW), reception to follow at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Parish Hall.
