Ronald (Ronnie) Robichaud Obituary
It is with unbelievable sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ronald (Ronnie) Robichaud, adored husband, father, friend, and teacher, on Aug. 30, 2024. Born ‘On the Hill’ in Fredericton, NB, on Jan. 14, 1963, Ronnie lived life to the fullest, touching so many people with his warmth, laughter, generosity, incredible stories, devotion to family and friends, adventurous spirit, and gregarious nature. He lit up every room he walked into with his smile, big hugs, and the occasional pig squeal. He loved a good cocktail or a glass of wine around a big backyard fire, cooking amazing meals, and was a loyal supporter of the New Zealand All Blacks, the Calgary Flames, the University of New Brunswick, and UNB Ironmen Rugby. He will be deeply missed by everyone fortunate enough to know him.
In Calgary, Ronnie found his second home and built a life with his ‘Lovey’ Deanna, whom he met in 1992 when he traveled west for the Stampede Sevens Rugby tournament while attending the University of New Brunswick. He graduated in the spring of 1993 and subsequently moved to Calgary to be with her. They were married in July 1994, recently celebrating 30 years of marriage. Ronnie called his children Joe and Kate his greatest accomplishments; he loved them unconditionally and was their biggest supporter as they navigated school, sports, and life.
As a teacher, Ronnie was beloved by his colleagues and the countless kids whose lives he influenced in so many ways, many of whom credit him for having faith in them and their ability to achieve their scholastic goals. He volunteered as a coach for the Our Lady of the Rockies (Bishop Grandin) High School rugby and soccer teams, resulting in multiple championships. He was active with the Alberta Teachers Association, and recently took on his most challenging and rewarding professional role as lead of PARK (Program for At Risk Kids) at the school.
Ronnie, Deanna, and the kids took regular trips to visit family and friends in New Brunswick. Visiting Fredericton was never complete without outings to UNB, Boyce Farmers Market, and the Lunar Rogue. His visits were always a highlight for his family, friends, and the local donair shop. In Calgary, the annual Robichaud Boxing Day open house achieved legendary status for any of those fortunate enough to attend, where amazing food, outrageous stories, laughter, and the World Juniors Hockey Championship could always be found.
Ronnie never hesitated when help was needed – he loved finding solutions to tricky problems and enjoyed helping his many friends and family solve theirs. He spent countless hours with his father-in-law Shawn, tinkering with projects big and small.
Deanna and Ronnie made many dear friends over the years, and the outpouring of support and comfort from all of them has been incredibly humbling and greatly appreciated. Special thanks go out to Joe and Patti Petrone for their incomparable friendship over the past 23 years. They have been constant travel buddies, Joe and Ronnie taught together, and the Petrone boys, Sean and Nate, grew up with Joe and Kate. They are like a second family to the Calgary Robichauds.
Ronnie is survived by the love of his life Deanna (Curran) Robichaud, his beloved children Joe and Kate, his mother Catherine, siblings Dianne, Larry, Cathy (Bob), Chris (Sheila), Pat, and Michael. He will be deeply missed by his many nieces and nephews, and their children, across the country. He loved watching them grow up, spending countless hours throwing them in the pool, helping them roast the perfect marshmallows, impressing upon them the importance of education, and teaching them songs about how cool their Uncle Ro-ro-ro-ro-Ronnie was. He is predeceased by his father, Louis, siblings Brian and Theresa, and nieces Lindsay and Kalie.
To celebrate Ronnie’s life, a viewing will be held at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services North (3625 12 St NE) on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., with a Prayer Service to follow at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, at St. Albert the Great Parish (10 Prestwick Drive SE) at 3:30 p.m. with live streaming of the service available through the link below. Receptions will be hosted by Ronnie’s family after both events.
In remembrance of Ronnie, and in lieu of flowers or other gifts, donations can be made in Ronnie’s name to the UNB Ironmen Rugby Football Club Alumni Scholarship: www.unb.ca/academics/calendar/undergraduate/current/awards/search/unb-ironmen-rugby-football-club-alumni-scholarship.html.
