Kathryn Garvey Obituary
Kathy died suddenly of a massive heart attack at Foothills Hospital early Saturday, November 25, 2023, with her husband Gerry holding her hand as she left us.
She leaves behind to mourn her husband of 30 years Gerry, son Austin, and sister Heather (Dan Crook) with many nieces, nephews, cousins and too many friends to mention. She was predeceased by her parents Graham and Sheila Muttart.
Kathy was born and grew up in Toronto with her sister Heather and parents in a happy household. She moved to Calgary in 1977 where she graduated from SAIT in the Lab Technology Program. She worked at Foothills Lab until her health issues with Crohn’s and Arthritis made her go on long term disability in 1994. Though she was in pain for most of her adult life she always put on a brave face, and no one knew the pain she was in.
Gerry met Kathy at the King Eddy in 1991 at a Saturday afternoon jam. She was with her best friend and fellow troublemaker Kathy Bewell. They found out they both had a great love for the Blues music. Their first trip together was to New Orleans to the Jazz Festival in 1992. They saw all the greats. Then went on a Blues Mecca pilgrimage and drove up the famous Highway 61 to Clarksdale Mississippi so they could get their pictures taken at The Crossroads Hwy. They also saw where Muddy Waters grew up. Of course, they had to go to Memphis and see Sun Studio and Graceland. For two music aficionados, it was the trip of a lifetime.
Her greatest joy in her life was her son Austin. She adored him and was very proud of the fine young man he became. The other 2 great joys were her cottage in PEI and singing at Mikeys on 12th on Sunday afternoon Jams. At Mikey’s, she had a regular group of friends, and it was the place where for those 4 hours she could forget her never-ending pain. She got great support from all of them and a special thank you to Tom Phillips, the host who always encouraged her with her music.
Though Gerry and Austin are heartbroken, they take great solace in that she is now out of pain and in heaven with her parents and best friend Sue Johnson making beautiful music together.
In Kathy’s true generous spirit, she has given someone the gift of sight with her organ donation.
There will be a Celebration of Kathy’s Life early in the new year with the time and date to follow. Her ashes will be spread at her favorite place, the cottage at PEI.
Thank you to the EMS, and the staff at Foothills for their valiant efforts.
In lieu of flowers donations to Women in Need Society at www.winsyyc.ca or your favorite charity would be appreciated.
