It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Rascan of Calgary, Alberta on January 3, 2024, after a hard-fought illness at the age of 87.
Joe was born on September 13, 1936 in Mala Polana, Slovenia to his parents Josef and Ana Rascan. Joe is predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Maria, Ana, Stefan, Ignac, Janez, and Ivan, all of Slovenia.
Joe is survived in Slovenia by his sisters, Barbara, and Katarina. Joe is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many life-long friends.
Joe’s journey to Canada began in 1957 in the small town of Robb, Alberta where he worked at the local sawmill. Joe then anchored himself in Edson, Alberta where he worked on the construction of the Canadian railroads and where he began crafting his skills as a blacksmith. After 12 years in Edson, Joe eventually moved to Calgary in 1971. It is here where Joe called home and began his highly respected 35 years of working for the City of Calgary as a blacksmith, welder, and mentor to other.
Joe lived a simple life, entrenching himself in the community, volunteering his time and energy. You often found Joe helping in the kitchen for events held at the Slovenian Canadian Club. He was well known for showcasing his talents for roasting a pig, making sausage, crafting homemade wine, and much more. Joe was always one to lend a hand to others. You would always see Joe out and about sharing his talents and time no matter what the project or request. Some of the best times with Joe was having the opportunity to visit with him to enjoy conversation, debate, friendly banter, and many good laughs.
For those wishing to pay their respects, Prayer Service will be held at Pierson’s Funeral Services (4121 – 17 Avenue SE, Calgary) on January 11, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Church (1525 – 45 Street SE, Calgary) on January 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside service will follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Reception will be held at the Canadian Slovenian Club (2335 – 16A Street SE, Calgary).
