James McDonald Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving father, James E. McDonald, on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, with family by his side.
He is survived by his wife Beverly (Dorscheid), predeceased by his wife Ella (2004), beloved mother of their children Scott (Linda), Laurie, Dave and Brett (Debbie). He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, his sister Gay Baird of San Diego and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Gordon.
Jim was born at the Scottish Nursing Home in Calgary on May 9, 1931. During the difficult years of the 1930s, his family moved to England to be closer to his mother’s family and remained there through the Great Depression. He attended Monkton Combe Boarding School near Bath, Somerset, and later Framlingham College near Woodbridge, Suffolk. In 1948, Jim returned to Canada where he would make many significant memories. In November 1951, Jim met Ella at Penney’s Dance Hall. They were engaged just 11 days later, married nine months after that, and shared a wonderful life for 52 years. He had a second chance at love and companionship with Beverly for the past 18 years, enjoying a number of travel adventures together.
Jim had a successful 40-year career as a Landman in the Oil and Gas industry. Alongside his professional achievements, he dedicated 42 years to Scouting earning the prestigious Silver Wolf Award in 2001. His commitment to the community extended to volunteering with the Southern Alberta Pioneers for 10 years, where he served two terms as Director.
Family was the most important thing in Jim’s life, and his happiest moments were spent with his loved ones gathered together. He also cherished his Sunday morning chats with his dear sister, Gay. He kept his sense of humour and smile to the end and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. To honor Jim’s wishes, there will be no service and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. If desired, contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of their choice.
