Edward (Ed) Evashuk Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Ed on June 3, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and strength.
Ed was a devoted husband of over 44 years to Marianne (Joss) and father to son Scott (Ashley), daughter Kristin and grandpa to Casey and Greyden. He touched the lives of all who knew him. His memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends. We find comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us.
Ed was born on Valentine’s Day in Winnipeg, which he loved to tell anyone who asked his date of birth. He had a high school rivalry with Marianne saying River East collegiate was better than Miles Mac collegiate. Miles Mac would beat them in so many sports that he played including basketball and volleyball which Marianne wouldn’t hesitate to rub in.
He worked at Canada Packers in Winnipeg until it closed down, which was a blessing in disguise. Ed then completed his CPA and work at Canada Revenue Agency in Winnipeg then Calgary. He loved to talk about taxes! Many of our family and friends can attest to the ongoing tax advice at gatherings. He was also very proud to have worked as a union rep with PIPSC from a stewart to a regional representative for the Prairies. The friendships he made through these roles followed him through his working years into his retirement.
When our family moved to Calgary, they were welcomed with open arms! What started as friendly gatherings with neighbours evolved into deep friendships. Right up to his passing, the “THONG” group enjoyed many special dinners together over so many years. Socializing with neighbours was also common in Kelowna, where Ed & Marianne and lived for 8 years, before moving back to Calgary. Ed was known for his rock and roll music; the neighbours always knew when he was cleaning the house.
Ed loved his children! He supported them in their school work and encouraged them in other activities. This included coaching Scott for years in soccer in East St Paul, whom won several City Championships which he was extremely proud of. His family love grew with the addition of a daughter in law Ashley and 2 beautiful grandchildren. Casey & Greyden were always so excited to visit Grandpa and would fill his lap with many toys. Our family also included many dogs, whom knew that he was always willing to share his food with them.
Together as a family, we enjoyed seasonal camping at Big Whiteshell Lake in Manitoba, along with many camping road trips. Once the campsite was set up, Ed could be seen with a beverage and a good book. Ed enjoyed the great outdoors and many other activities. This created a love of camping for both Scott & Kristin! Family camping continued in both Alberta & BC.
Ed loved his cars; especially his Cuda and enjoyed many car shows where ever we lived and travelled to.
He was an avid golfer, self taught, by sneaking on the neighborhood golf course. Ed tried to teach Marianne and Scott; but this never worked! Kristin avoided these golf lessons from Dad.
Ed loved his sports teams which included the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, Boston Red Socks and his beloved New England Patriots. He was a season ticket holder for many years with the Winnipeg Jets and also cheered on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was quick to egg on others when their teams played his.
Ed couldn’t wait for his winter vacations in Mexico and the Caribbean. We don’t know which he enjoyed more – the drinks and reading on the beach or haggling for souvenirs. Together with Marianne they enjoyed several bus excursions in Europe as well as winter holidays in Arizona and California. Since moving from Winnipeg, annual summer trips back home were a special time as we reconnected with our family and friends. There were so many wonderful times and memories, including our last trip late January 2024 to the Dominican Republic.
Thank you to Home Care and the Palliative Care teams in Calgary who helped Ed during his final days with us.
Please keep Ed in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Let’s raise a toast of Crown Royal & ginger ale, white wine, beer or your favourite beverage to Ed.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Calgary on Saturday June 29, 2024 from 2-6 pm at the family residence.
In memory of Ed, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated in lieu of flowers cancer.ca/donate
With heartfelt condolences,
Marianne, Scott and Kristin
