Doreen Findlater Obituary
Doreen Margaret Findlater passed away in Calgary on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the age of 95. Doreen was predeceased by her youngest brother Bob Randell in 2015 and husband Ron Findlater in 2019.
She is survived by her two sons, Rod (Catherine) and Randy and other brother Don Randell (Jeanne). She is also survived by Rod’s son Jeff (Andrea) and their children Addison and Jack; Catherine’s son Ryan and daughter Lindsay (Mike) and her children, Nicolas and Annalise and Catherine’s mom Geri Fowler.
Doreen was born on December 14, 1928, in Alsask, Saskatchewan as the oldest of three children to Herb and Ruby Randell.
Doreen was a stay-at-home mom until her boys were older. She then worked at Simpson Sears in Calgary in the cosmetic department and later as a receptionist for an optometrist. Doreen volunteered at the Rockyview hospital hanging and arranging pictures in the hospital halls. She also volunteered teaching English as a second language and met a good friend Maria Wong and family while helping Maria learn English.
She enjoyed competitive curling, bridge and golf. Doreen took up painting in her 60’s and was primarily self-taught. She enjoyed painting all types of subjects but was particularly fond of landscapes and flowers. Her son Randy supplied a lot of the winter scenery references she used in her paintings while he was cross country skiing in the mountains. Doreen spent many enjoyable hours painting in her small studio at her Calgary home.
The family would like to thank the staff on the second floor of Prominence Way Retirement Community and the staff on the first floor of the Silverado Creek Seniors Community for their loving care of Doreen during her final years as she struggled with dementia.
Doreen’s ashes will be interred next to Ron in the Findlater family plot at Gilbert Plains Manitoba.
