Donald Bobyn Obituary
It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Donald (Don) James Bobyn, on September 13, 2024, age 84, in Calgary, Alberta.
A cherished son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend, Don will forever be remembered for his infectious smile and positive energy.
Born on December 18, 1939, to parents James and Katherine Bobyn (nee Boryski) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Don was the youngest of four brothers, Edward, Patrick and Orest, all of whom he shared a special bond with. When the “4 brothers” were together the house was always filled with laughter. The 4 brothers so loved their families, they established a small trust to ensure Bobyn family reunions could continue for what has grown to +90 members of the extended Bobyn family.
Don met the love of his life, Marcelia (Marcy) Burlack in Saskatoon in 1959. They were married on May 18, 1963, and were blessed with three children; Gregory, Linda and Ronald. Don was never shy about expressing his love for Marcy and his children, and his eyes always glistened when asked to tell the stories of his love for his family.
Don graduated from the University of Saskatchewan as a Civil Engineer (honors) in 1963. Don and Marcy moved to Calgary, where Don made his mark as a respected oil and gas executive (Sulpetro). In 1991, Don launched a private company (Sogar Resources), currently under the leadership of his son, Ron Bobyn, as a special source of pride for Don. He was a mentor, builder and dreamer, always seeking new opportunities organizing people toward the next challenge. Don always treated his professional colleagues and investors like family.
Don loved to travel the world with Marcy and friends. They could also be found enjoying the mountains at the family cabin in Panorama, BC, engaging in a “friendly” game of Troika, attending the latest production at Rosebud Theater, or teaching his grandchildren how to drive a stick shift in his beloved green convertible. He was always the guy who brought everyone together, whether there was a reason or not. Don was always the social leader.
Don was extremely proud of his Ukrainian heritage, dedicating countless hours in support of many organizations, including Medical Mercy Canada (MMC) and the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), to name a few. He will be remembered as one of the founding members of St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Parish and 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. Whether it was volunteering at the annual Men’s Dinner or singing with the choir during Sunday Liturgy, Don always made time for the organizations and people he loved. This was especially true when it came to his unwavering support for his wife, children and grandchildren.
Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marcy, his children Gregory (Stacey), Linda (Christian), and Ronald (Shonalie), his grandchildren Laura, Amy, David, Elise, Sarah, Jonathan, Owen, Kailey, Breanne, Joey & Rozie, and 16 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by parents James and Katherine; brothers Edward, Patrick, and Orest; and nephews David and Donald.
A Funeral Liturgy for family and friends will be held at St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church (4903 – 45 Street SW Calgary) on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 10:30am followed by lunch and a reception in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, or donations, Don would want you to donate your time to a charity, spend more time with your family, reach out to a friend, or help those in need.
