Anthony (Tony) Foscolos Obituary
Tony Foscolos was born in Cairo, Egypt on May 15, 1930. Unfortunately, Tony lost his father at the age of 14 years old in Egypt.
Upon completing high school in Egypt, Tony moved to Greece and obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece. After his university studies, he found a job in the Kopais Valley located 90 km north of Athens.
While in Kopais, Anthony met his wife, Chrissoula, and they married in 1959. In 1960, Tony received a scholarship to study at the University of California, Berkeley, where he obtained his Master’s degree and Doctoral (PHD) in the field of GeoChemistry in 1966.
From 1966 to 1986, Tony was employed by the Canadian Government to work at the Geological Survey of Canada, Calgary, Alberta. Upon taking early retirement, he returned to Greece and was instrumental in the establishment of the Technical University of Crete, in Hania, Crete where he researched and taught until his second retirement.
Tony spent his last 5 months at the Agape hospice where he was able to rest and live the remaining days of his life, however, even while at Agape, he continued to write articles on his specialty and passion; the exploration of hydrocarbons in Greece.
Tony is survived by his wife, Chrissoula, and sons, Elias (Simlie) and Sotirios (Belen), and granddaughters, Adrienne and Chrissa. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Magda, and nephews, Jimmy (Alisa) and Soti (Naomi) and their children.
Throughout his life, Tony was given many opportunities to advance and believes that his successes were guided by the Virgin Mary and not by himself.
Anthony will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A Private Funeral Service will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. The Foscolos family would like to thank the staff at the Agape Hospice for all their support. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to The Agape Hospice (1302 8 Ave NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 1B8).

Excerpt from the Hania News:
The sad news was made known by Dr. Sotiris Kamenopoulos, PhD of the School of Mineral Resources Engineering of the Technical University of Crete, with a post on social media, in which he characterizes Antonis Foskolos as “a great nobleman and pioneer in the struggle for the exploitation of Greek hydrocarbons” and speaks of “a great loss for our Greece”
As is well known, Professor Foskolos, with his perseverance and the courage of his opinion, managed to highlight, for many years, the importance of our country’s energy reserves for the energy security of the whole of Europe, an issue that became particularly topical after recent geopolitical developments.
Antonis Foskolos had made special references to the hydrocarbon deposits west and southwest of Crete – and specifically of the Regional Unit of Chania – stressing that “there are at least 10 coral reefs that have biogenic natural gas. I estimate the quantity at about 10 trillion m3. With this quantity we can supply/export with EUR 200 billion. m3 natural gas to the European Union for 50 years, which is the lifespan of the deposits”, Antonis Foskolos had pointed out in his article.
“As a result of this exploitation, the Greek State received $650 trillion from ExxonMobil, given that the value of the deposits, $10/1,000 m3, amounts to $3.25 billion. With this amount we are repaying the public debt of $ 400 billion. and we are left with another $3.249600 billion. An untold amount and a huge economic benefit for Greece”, noted Antonis Foskolos.
HANIA.news, which Antonis Foskolos often chose to comment on developments regarding hydrocarbon exploration in our country and especially west and southwest of Crete, expresses its sincere condolences to his family and relatives.
