Born in the tiny French community of Ile des Chenes, Manitoba in 1932, to Walter Van Walleghem and Marie Anne (née D’Auteuil) Cam grew up with 6 siblings on the family farm. Throughout his life he would look back fondly on his memories of occasionally falling asleep in the barn with the cows as a small boy. Cam was an animal lover, and a humanitarian who would gladly offer a helping hand to anyone in need, regardless of any personal cost to himself. In his youth he was well known around Rooster Town in Winnipeg and was often spotted bringing deliveries to those in need in the small Metis community. His strong personal ideals caused him to strive to care for those who were marginalized from society at large.
Camille contributed to the Van Walleghem family legacy by working for the family dairy (Royal Dairies, and then Beatrice) for his entire career. He retired in 1997 after many decades of service. He also worked for the Canadian Armed Forces during war time, teaching soldiers how to drive tanks before they were deployed overseas. His work ethic was unmatched, and he toiled tirelessly to support his family.
Together with his wife Dorothy (née Cook) he had 9 children, all of whom he loved unconditionally. The family was not however without its heartache and struggles, but they persevered, and Cam made the choice to join AA and never touched a drop of alcohol again. He became a fixture at the weekly AA meetings in his neighbourhood and sponsored a great number of people over the years, helping them turn their lives around.
He cared not only for people, but for the environment as well, and in his later years he could often be seen riding around on his bike, picking up scrap metal to recycle. He would ride that bike everywhere, all year round, even to the small towns around Manitoba, much to the complete bafflement of his family as to how he managed to stay upright through ice and snow for miles upon miles, but he never let anything stop him. He was always there for a friend or family member in need, and throughout Winnipeg he couldn’t go anywhere without someone shouting out “Hey Cam! How’s it goin?” He was truly well known and loved by everyone.
Cam was predeceased by his parents, Walter, and Marie; his wife Dorothy; and his sisters Venice and Julie. He leaves to mourn his nine children: Kenneth, Donna, Loretta (John Cawson), Lucy, Annette, Darcy, Yvonne, Russell, and Christopher; siblings Lorraine, Beatrice, Florence, and Donald as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Riverview Health Centre, for all the loving care they provided over the last few years, and Bardal Funeral Home for their compassion in our time of need.
