Clarence Samuel Allen Helsdon, known affectionately by friends and family as Sam, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2023, in Tillsonburg. Sam, born on January 21, 1937, in Norwich, Ontario married his beloved wife the late Dorothy on June 13, 1959.
A dedicated father to his sons, Jeff and his wife Karen, and John and his spouse Deb. He took great pride and joy in his four grandchildren, Kai, Collin, Abigail and Aliyah and great grandson Xander.
He is survived by sister-in-law Judy Brown and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Sam was son of the late Clarence and Laura Helsdon. He is predeceased by brother Gordon Powell and wife Betty, sister May Turner and husband Jack, brother Charlie Helsdon and wife Ora, brother Jim Powell and wife Vera, sister-in-law Phylis Tilden and husband Cam, brother-in-law Bob Tattersall and wife Olive, sister-in-law Doreen Fewster and husband Bev.
Sam’s interests were wide and varied, reflecting his interesting character. He was a proud member of St. Paul’s United Church, where he once served as chairman of the Board. He was a founding member of the Tillsonburg District Craft Guild. His community involvement didn’t stop there; he was also a member of the Tillsonburg Legion and the Tillsonburg and District Historical Society.
In his retirement, Sam found great joy in travelling extensively, exploring new cultures and landscapes. He had a keen eye for beauty which he expressed through his paintings. His love for nature was evident in his beautiful garden, which he tended to with great care and passion.
Sam’s life was a testament to his kind nature and interesting personality. His dedication to his family, career, and community were commendable. He will be profoundly missed, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the institutions he contributed to.
Family and friends are invited to join the Helsdon family for a memorial visitation on Friday August 25, 2023 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm and 7:00pm until 9:00pm at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell St., Tillsonburg (519) 842-5221. A Memorial Service will then be held on Saturday August 26, 2023 at 11:00am at St. Paul’s United Church, 88 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg. Rev. Karlene Brown-Palmer to officiate. Inurnment to follow the service at Tillsonburg Cemetery.
