Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Brian Edward Forsythe, of Moncton, New Brunswick on January 15th, 2022, at the age of 75 years.
Brian will be missed by his loving wife and life collaborator of 36 years, Cindi Forsythe (MacPherson); sons James Forsythe (Lindsay Johnson) and Christopher Forsythe (Allison Ethier); grandsons Oliver, Russell, Zachary and Owen; brother Blair Forsythe; sisters Corrinne (Paul) Carpenter and Elaine (Ron) Denton; brother-in-law Kim (Martha) MacPherson and sister-in-law Trudy (late Bill) Brydges; 12 nieces and nephews and countless friends.
Brian was predeceased by sister Karen Maxwell and parents Dorothy (Huskins) and Edward Forsythe.
Brian will be remembered as a wonderful teacher, guidance counselor, school administrator, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and coach. Many in the Moncton basketball community felt that Brian was one of the godfathers in growing the sport in the city and was one of the founding members of the Moncton Minor Basketball Association. With the help of others, Brian founded The Greater Moncton High School Hub City Hoop Classic Basketball Tournament where many positive memories were made for thousands of high school athletes and students. This tournament is still in existence today.
Brian coached the boys’ basketball teams at Fundy (Eastern Charlotte) High School in the late 70’s where he was a history teacher, at Harrison Trimble High School in the 80’s and 90’s where he was a guidance counselor and Vice Principal, at Saint John High School where he was Principal, and then at Riverview High School where he was Vice Principal. Brian was the longest tenured coach at HTHS and was the model of starting and sustaining a basketball program which was the envy of many schools in New Brunswick. Brian was an assistant coach at Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Quebec for 4 years. Brian coached Team New Brunswick Basketball in the late 1980’s and early 90’s. He led two schools to provincial high school championships; Eastern Charlotte Regional High School won the “A” title in 1975 and the Harrison Trimble Trojans won the “AAA” title in 1992-93. Brian was honored by Basketball New Brunswick in 1987, 1993 and 2001 as Coach of The Year and became an Honorary Lifetime BNB Member in 2004.
Brian un-retired in 2011 to continue his career in education as an administrator in China working for the AEI group of schools in that country. During his years in international education, Brian was the Head Of School of the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen. He led this school through the grueling process of becoming an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School; a prestigious feather in his cap at the end of a distinguished career in education. Working for AEI in various Chinese cities brought him closer to family living abroad and to fulfilling epic travel adventures with Cindi and their friends.
A group of former players and supporters has worked to have the Harrison Trimble High School gymnasium named in Brian’s honor.
A celebration of life will take place in the summer of 2023.
Guessing by his trademark greeting: “are we having fun yet?”, we’re sure that Brian, in the afterlife, has already found time for some basketball, got a card game organized, and is looking at his travel options to far off warm and sunny places; simply put he’s already having fun and he’d want those of us who knew him to get back to doing so as well.
