Obituary
Cunningham, Brian Carlyle – The family of Brian Carlyle Cunningham (84) of Newellton, Cape Sable Island are saddened to announce his untimely passing on April 20th, 2023 while a patient in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Brian lived his whole life on Cape Sable Island, never needing to travel far away from his home. He was an inshore lobster fisherman and Irish moss harvester all his working life. He was a gentle, kind and generous man to a large contingency of family, friends and at times, to complete strangers. Over the years his house and yard was a haven for countless stray cats which all received love, attention, free meals or a warm home. Brian is the last surviving member of Alpheus and Claire (Smith) Cunningham’s family: predeceased by his parents, brother Edward and sisters Edith Messenger and Jean Ross. He is survived by six nieces and nephews – Sandra Goreham, Woods Harbour, Jo Ann Messenger, Toronto, Valerie Higgins (nee Ross), Stoney Island, Larry Messenger, Mineville, Chris Messenger, North East Point, Randy Ross, Centreville, and many close cousins, especially Leigh Cunningham. The extended family includes three more generations of nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by nephew Michael Ross and great-nephews Trevor Goreham and Roan Messenger. Brian continued his parents’ philosophy of an open house as his doors were always open to ‘drop ins’ from predawn to dark; many were known to arrive unheralded; many were the regulars who came briefly, socially and more often than not, more than once a day. All were welcome in his house. Brian will be laid to rest beside his partner Annette Newell in Newellton Cemetery. The family are grateful for the attention he received from the local VON, Homecare, and visiting Medical staff, which all allowed him to live comfortably at home. Arrangements have been entrusted to H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday April 22nd from 6-8 pm. A graveside service only will be at 9:30 AM on Sunday, April 23rd, at the Newellton Cemetery with Pastor Shawn Hatfield officiating.
