BRENDA MARIE STAMP (HICKEY)
Brenda Hickey was born on May 20, 1952 in St. John’s, and grew up in Riverhead, Harbour Grace and Corner Brook, NL. She became Brenda Stamp when she and John Stamp were married on June 30, 1988, and she and John were devoted parents to sons Shannon and Aaron.
Sadly, on Monday, March 6, 2023, Brenda passed peacefully away in her sleep at the L.A. Miller Palliative Care Unit. She was predeceased by John, her husband of 33 years, on October 15, 2022 (they were both at The Health Sciences Centre at the same time, and Brenda was too ill to attend a funeral for him); by her parents Angela (Brazil) and William Hickey; and by her sister Paulette (Calvin Whalen, deceased).
Brenda was a devoted teacher and natural educator. She began her career in Corner Brook, moving to St. John’s early on and teaching at Beaconsfield Jr. High, Holy Heart and Gonzaga High Schools. Upon retirement, Brenda continued to help students as a devoted tutor, and her students’ successes made everyone proud. We are very sure they will hear her voice when encountering a math problem- guiding, and maybe even cajoling, them to get it done! Some of her final tutoring sessions were held a few weeks ago at Lane’s with her nephew’s children, Nathan and Charlotte. They’re still working on the sheets she provided for practice!
Brenda leaves to morn, with loving memories, her sons Shannon (Hanan Hazime) and Aaron Stamp; brother Bill (Carolyn Milley); nephew Joel Hickey (Karen Careen) and children Alana Careen, Nathan and Charlotte Hickey; nephew Allan Hickey; nephew Sean Casey (Deanne Newton) in Los Angeles; and niece Tina Casey (Alex Dalziel) and their daughter Emery, in Ottawa.
Brenda’s family would like to thank the many friends, former students and relatives who supported her throughout her illness. Special mention to Jeanie Coombs and her children, Julia Coombs and Janet Allan; John and Frances Smart; Ann Coombs; Bernadette Clarke; Jackie and Ken Martin; Nancy Taylor; Pauline and David Dawe; Marilyn and Derrick Fisher; Lorna Clarke; Carol Gibbons and Roger Noseworthy.
Sincere thanks on behalf of the family to the doctors and staff members at Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Centre; 4NA at the Health Sciences Centre; the Community Health Nursing Team; Lanes Retirement Living; and the Palliative Care Unit. All provided exemplary care and support to Brenda throughout her cancer journey.
