Brant died peacefully at 9:00 pm at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Reta and is survived by his loving and devoted family: children Karrie, Ed (Debra); grandchildren Ted and John McCluskie, Joshua (Heather) and Patrick (Brittany); great grandchildren Keith, Owen, Adam, Brantley and Chelsey.
Brant grew up in Stratford, Ontario with parents Ed and Haidie Smith. He is survived by his brothers, Harley and Paul Smith and sister, Laura Pogson. In Stratford he met his future wife Reta Roe in school. They were married in Stratford in 1958 and moved to Kitchener. He received a degree in psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University. While Brant started out as a math/art teacher, he became passionate about student advocacy and completed his career as a guidance counsellor. He also had an interest in helping in many ways in the community through his work in the church, Rotary, the Gilbert and Sullivan society and Breakfast Club to mention a few. Brant became an elder at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Kitchener and served there for many years. When he moved to Ottawa in 2014 to be closer to family, he was involved in the St. Paul’s seniors group and community service.
Brant enjoyed playing bridge, live music, theatre and travelling with family and friends on trips to Europe as well as regularly dining out. He loved to cook and many of his friends will remember great dinner parties with music and singing.
In his final year Brant struggled with cancer and other medical issues, but always remained positive. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Queensway Carleton, Civic, Bruyère and St. Vincent’s Hospitals. A sophisticated dedicated leader Brant was well liked by all and will be greatly missed.
A service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving will be held at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 971 Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa, on Saturday, April 22 at 11:00 am, with a reception following.
