Obituary
Elizabeth Marion (Betty) Bartlett
1938-2023
It is with deep sadness and heartbreak that we announce the passing of Elizabeth M. (Betty) Bartlett (nee MacLaren), in the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 18th, at the Moncton Hospital, at age 84. Born in Moncton, June 22, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Thelma and Donald MacLaren of Moncton.
Having survived Covid without hospitalization in October 2022, she had an unfortunate fall at her home shortly after in November. While hospitalized, it was discovered that she had stage four pancreatic and liver cancer. She was kept hospitalized until her passing. During this time, her family was with her daily up to the time she was moved to palliative care in the hospital for her final six days. During that time, her family kept vigil at her bedside twenty-four hours a day, in rotation. She was never alone those final days and was kept comfortable until her peaceful passing.
Betty is survived by her son George (Angeline), and daughters Kimberly (Bryon Chapman), and Bonnie-Lee, as well as her four very beloved, cherished grandchildren: Nicholas Daigle, Savannah Bartlett, Mikyla Bartlett and Taylor Gallant. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much, including special nephew Danny MacLaren.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, John Thomas Bartlett (1972), and her brothers, George Vernon MacLaren and Donald Edward Willett and several in-laws. Betty was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and therefore the matriarch of her surviving family.
Betty was widowed at a young age in 1972, left to raise three young children on her own. Aside from being an incredible mother, she kept involved in her community and was always on the go. She was also all about having fun at whatever challenge she took on-laughter and smiles were always important to Betty. She had a very adept understanding of work/life balance long before the term was popular. She made sure her children came first and they were involved in any and every activity they showed interest in from sports to dance to church activities. They all were encouraged to have an active social life outside the home, while achieving good grades in school throughout. Her strong work ethic also filtered down to her children. That was instilled in her children at an early age. Though not a church goer, Betty was a very religious and spiritual lady who did daily devotionals and read her Bible frequently.
Betty was a strong, passionate, independent woman with a great sense of humour. She also had a passion for politics and in the 1970’s served as the VP of the Moncton North PC Association during the Dennis Cochrane years with Dennis as President of the Association. They became very close at this time and were involved in many campaigns together over time.
On a lighter side, Mom was a great cook, often with a book; a super homemaker and dessert baker; could spot a flea on a pet from twenty feet away yet read a newspaper with a magnifying glass; was a true lover of animals and birds, especially family pets over the years and of course “her” robins who frequented her backyard (all the cut-up apples may have something to do with that); someone who always had an opinion on everything, and if you did not, she would be happy to provide you with one to “use”; a lover of beaches and swimming- she never met a beach she didn’t like; a lover of music and dance especially during the 60’s-70’s era; loved having her house overtaken by our friends, neighbourhood kids and cousins; an entrepreneur with a sharp business mind, but most of all, she loved being a mother.
She was also a fierce and loyal friend to many, but held special friendships with the late Marion Robertson, Dorothy (Dot) Jackson, Eva Wilson and more recently close friends Maureen Macaulay, and Jeanette Gallant.
She kept her loving ways right to the end; always using her sharp wit with her doctors and nurses, smiling, determined to overcome the “Big C” and always telling the medical staff she loved them when they left her room.
The family are so appreciative and would like to recognize the medical and support staff who cared for Mom over the three months in their care. Drs, Allanach, MacDonald and Comstock and Peters Thank you as well to the Palliative Care Team as well as the teams on 5600, 5200, and 6600. She made special mention of all the wonderful nurses she encountered during her time there. A huge thank you as well to family friend and hospital Recreational Therapist Pauline Webb (Daley).
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Friends of the Moncton Hospital, The Palliative Care Unit (friendsfoundation.ca) Angel’s Dog Rescue (Angeldogrescue123@gmail.com) or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Fergusons Funeral Home and Chapel at 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton. Cremation has already taken place as per her wishes. A visitation will be held at Fergusons on Monday, January 23rd. from 2 pm to 3 pm with a Celebration of Life to honour Betty immediately following.
