Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Betty Jean Dickie (nee Mills) on May 1, 2023 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, NS. Betty was born in Springhill, NS to the late June and Gerald Mills. After 5 years of being an only child, Betty became big sister to Judy. She attended the Valley Road School until grade 7, where she proceeded to go to Springhill High School. Betty furthered her education at Springhill Vocational School, now renamed NSCC, where she obtained her Stenographers diploma. Betty then moved to Halifax, working for Dalhousie University as a personal secretary for Kate MacDonald, the director of the School of Dental Hygiene. Betty excelled at her position at Dal, making many lifelong friends, including fellow stenographer, Marliynn Leslie. Betty met her husband, Dwayne, in 1971. They were married the following year and recently celebrated their 50th anniversary surrounded by friends and family. The happy couple lived in River Philip, raising their children Pam and Paul. The family was very close, celebrating all of life’s ups and downs together with humour, strength, and love. Betty prided herself on her home cooking and was known for her turkey dressing, shortbreads, and Nana’s goulash. Betty and Dwayne loved traveling the roads of Nova Scotia taking in the sights. Betty was an amazing wife, mother, sister and Nana, always taking care of her family. She will be greatly missed but forever with us in spirit. Betty was an avid volunteer with River Philip UCW, minor hockey and Girl Guides. She enjoyed her Tuesday nights with her TOPS pals, taking on the role of group leader various times and again making many lifelong friendships. While raising her family, Betty worked at the Oxford Regional Elementary School cafeteria, Trees for Tomorrow and High-Crest Nursing Home in Springhill. Betty is survived by her husband, Dwayne; her daughter, Pam (Bill) MacIntosh and their children, Bethany and Nathan, River Philip; her son, Paul (Heather) and their children, Claire, Joshua, and Jonathan, Wainwright, AB; stepdaughter, Stacey Estabrooks, her husband, John and their children and grandchildren, Sackville, NB. This extended family was a blessing to Betty, and she was proud of each one of them. Also survived by her sister, Judy (Mills) Garrison and her husband, Eric, Ketch Harbour. She is predeceased by her beloved parents, Gerald and June (Bryan) Mills. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the doctors and nurses, from Halifax, Truro to Amherst, for their excellent care and support. The VON Cumberland have a special place in our hearts. Without “mum’s nurses”, she would not have been as comfortable these last 2 years. Arrangements are in the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium. In according to Betty’s wishes, there will be a simple committal service at the Glenville Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 7. All family and friends are welcome to join in a celebration of Betty’s life at the graveside. Donations welcome to the VON Cumberland and Glenville Cemetery Fund.
