It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Beryl Mary Wales “Nana”, at the young age of 84, on February 15, in Selkirk, MB. Beryl was born on July 15, 1938, in Liverpool, England.
She was just a child during World War 2, and would often tell stories of going to school, at 3 years old, with her Mickey Mouse gas mask, and spending countless hours inside an air raid shelter listening to the bombs drop above her. She spoke of how food was rationed and how she came to dislike tea.
Beryl persevered through the tough times and graduated from City Hospitals Nursing School, in York, England, in December, 1958, where she met her Husband, Harry. Beryl and Harry married and had 2 sons, Jeremy and Howard, later relocating to Nottingham, England where they had their daughter, Joanne.
Beryl immigrated to Canada in 1968, with her husband and their three children. Beryl dedicated her life to nursing and taught, as well as assisted in developing, the very first Healthcare Aide course. After 56 years of nursing and very few sick days, Beryl retired in 2015, at the age of 77.
She made many friends throughout her life and will be greatly missed by anyone who knew her.
She was a breast cancer survivor and supported the Breast Cancer Foundation as well as many other charities.
Beryl is predeceased by her husband, Harry; brother Hugh; grandson Matthew (Howard); and great-granddaughter Kylie (Melissa).
She leaves behind her children, Jeremy, Joanne (Andy), and Howard (Carol); grandchildren, Bradly (Diana), Melissa, Taylor, and Ryan (Junia); and great-grandchildren Jessica (Quinn), Brady, Nathan, Alisha, Tiana, Tyler, Phillip, Kodi, Declan, Katniss, and Hunter.
We’ll love you forever, we’ll like you for always. As long as we’re living, our Nana you’ll be. A special thank you to the Selkirk care team. You know who are and you are so appreciated.
Celebration of life to be held at the Unitarian Universal Church located at 603 Wellington Crescent on Friday, March 3 2023 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
