Bert passed away on the morning of March 13th, 2023 at the Ottawa Hospital with family at his side. He was born in Prince George, B.C. to Garth Williams (deceased) and Anna (nee Mac) Williams (deceased). Bert is survived by Margaret (nee Lynch) his wife of 50 years, his much beloved daughter Maureen, his son Gregory (Saima), his cherished grand-daughters Dominique (Tyler), Nicole (Tanner) and his great grand-daughter Phoebe. He will also be missed by his brother Allan, his sister-in-law Mary (Merritt), niece Emma (Lionel), his nephew Dylan (Emily) as well as his grand nephews Damien and Jordan and his grand nieces Lilah and Sadie. Bert will also be remembered by his relatives in Michigan.
Bert served in the Canadian Military for 24 years. First in the army with the 8th Canadian Hussars and then in the Air Force as a photo technician. After leaving the military he worked for several years for the Corps Commissionaires.
In his spare time, Bert loved to read including books on military history and fantasy novels. He was also a Cub leader, enjoyed fishing, and building military figurines. As a sports lover, he was an avid fan of the Ottawa senators and spent many memorable hours watching his children, grand-daughters, and great grand-daughter play soccer.
Post-retirement, Bert and Margaret loved to travel together. They went on several trips and cruises. One special moment for Bert occurred when they visited Latvia, which was his mother’s homeland.
Towards the end of his life Bert faced several health challenges while continuing to maintain a positive attitude. During this time, he was supported by several health professionals. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and chaplains at the Ottawa Hospital (Civic and General campuses) for their kindness and care. We would also like to thank Dr. Quach Bert’s long time family physician.
A Wake is being held for Bert on March 22nd, 2023 from 7pm to 9pm at the Heritage Funeral Complex (1250 Trim Road) in Orleans. The funeral will be held on March 23rd, 2023 at 1pm at Divine Infant Church (6658 Bilberry Drive) in Orleans.
In keeping with Bert’s wishes donations to the Canadian Lung Association or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
