Obituary
KELLER, Bernhardt Daniel John (Ben) passed away peacefully at Spruce Lodge LTC on Saturday July 1, 2023 at the age of 100. He was born October 7, 1922 to the late Karl and Margaret (Schmidt) Keller in North Easthope Township. Ben was the last and longest living person of his generation of the Keller family.
Beloved husband of Lucille (2012) who he married on June 5, 1948. They celebrated their 64th Anniversary in June of 2012.
Ben is survived by his son Murray and daughter-in-law Kathy. He was predeceased by brothers and sisters-in-law Oscar and Betty Keller, Carl and Wilma Keller, Laverne and Shirley Keller and Russell Bigam, Henry and Gloria Keller, one sister Magdalene and husband Cecil Herman, and Lucille’s brother Rueben and wife Gladys Roeder.
Ben and Lucille enjoyed farming for many years in North Easthope Township and when they retired, moved to Stratford and he began his second career as a carpenter for the Stratford Shakespearean Festival for some years. Later they moved to Hamlet Estates to take life easier and Ben continued to live there after Lucille’s passing. He spent his last years in Spruce Lodge when he could no longer manage on his own. Ben served on many boards such as St. Peters Lutheran Church council and Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee of SS #6 and Chair of the North Easthope Central School Board, a Chartered member of the Ellice Optimist Club of Ellice and while Chairman received a lifetime membership of Optimist International, Chairman of Perth County Milk Committee, and joined the Stratford Agricultural Society where he was a Director for over 40 years serving twice as Chairman of the Board. Ben was also a member of the North Easthope tractor and Breakfast Club (N.E.A.T.).
In his spare time, Ben loved to snowmobile, restore antique Ford cars and a truck, and Ford tractors and he enjoyed making homemade beer and wine. He also loved to have a rousing game of Solo every chance he had and you would always get a meal as a bonus for dropping by. Over the years Ben and Lucille travelled to many places in Canada and abroad and enjoyed meeting new people and made friends wherever they went.
Murray and Kathy would like to sincerely thank Spruce Lodge and their many doctors, nurses and PSW’s and all the staff for the thoughtful and kind care of Ben over the past 10 years. We are so appreciative to them for the quality care and peace of mind we had, that he was always well looked after.
Visitation is being held on Tuesday July 4th from 6-8 at W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford , where the funeral will take place on Wednesday July 5th at 11 am. Donations can be made to Spruce Lodge Foundation through the funeral home. 19.271.7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
