Obituary of Barry David Barton
BARTON – Barry David of St. Thomas, fixer of all things and the go-to man for a solution, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at the age of 70. Barry enjoyed life and lived it his way. He was a skilled wood worker, classic car enthusiast and connoisseur of fine scotch. His hobbies included scuba diving, photography, boating, travel, camping and curling. Barry loved history and was a supporter of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Barry is survived by his loving wife Nellie of 32 years; by his children: Brandey (Colin) Smythe of Kent Bridge, Brad (Jessica) Barton of Beachburg, and Rob (Michele) Barton of Clachan. Cherished Grampa of Lily, Blake, Sydney, Kensie and Lorelei. Lovingly remembered by his mother Velma Barton-Huntington (98); his brother Kim (Emily) Barton; by his siblings-in-law Adrian Van Opstal, Harry (Bonnie) Van Opstal, Liz (late Doug) Wolfe, Jim (Darlene) Van Opstal, Wayne (Lynn) Van Opstal, Maureen Wall, Shelley Wall; and by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by his first wife Sharon Barton (1988) and his father Lloyd Barton (1988).
Barry worked at Ontario Hydro for 30 years, a profession that took him across the province. After his retirement from Hydro, Barry went on to conduct electrical safety presentations in elementary schools. Barry retired for good after working as a health and safety consultant on various projects.
Visitation will be held at the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570) on Monday, February 13, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm. A celebration of Barry’s life drink will be held at a later date. Donations are welcome in Barry’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation or St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH).
