Barbara Joan Russell
August 18, 1945 – April 28, 2023
Barbara Joan (Terry) Russell was born in Edmonton, Alberta on August 18, 1945. She passed away as a result of Alzheimer’s disease in Vista Village in Pincher Creek, Alberta, on April 28, 2023, at the age of 77.
Barbara was raised in Camrose and later Edmonton, Alberta, where she lived until she met, and then was sealed for time and all eternity, to Duncan Russell in the Cardston Alberta Temple on February 17, 1968. She supported her husband in furthering his education to a variety of locations in the United States. Five years and four children later they finally settled in 1974 in Pincher Creek, Alberta where they added two more children to their family. This is where Barbara called home for the remainder of her life.
Barbara was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in many capacities, but her love was with the primary children. In 2012 she served a full-time church mission with Duncan in Toronto, Ontario. This was a particularly special time in their 55 years of marriage as they spent the time refocusing on each other as they served together.
Barbara loved springtime when this provided her with the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and plant flowers in her yard. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and re-reading books, puzzles and going for walks with Duncan.
In the early years of the disease, Barbara was able to remain living at home with Duncan as her primary caregiver, who lasted longer than most husbands would have. It was her wish to remain at home as long as she could but as the disease progressed, they realized it was time to make the move to a care facility.
Barbara leaves behind a legacy of selfless love. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy. She was our anchor as she guided us with quiet strength. Mom was the deliverer and messenger of our Savior to all those that she loved and held close.
Barbara is survived by her husband Duncan; her six children: Becky Russell (Frank Jenkins) of Pincher Creek, Sarah Thomas (Chris) of Newport, Washington, Kathy Jardine (Steve) of Lehi, Utah, Jenni Donato (Didier) of Okotoks, Alberta, Rachel Garstad (Nate) of Lethbridge, Alberta, and Cameron Russell (Stevie) of Lethbridge, Alberta; twenty grandchildren (Taylor, Gabrielle, Courtney, Tiffany, Kai, Sam, Abby, Kloee, Maxwell, Katie, Brittni, Mitchell, Elijah, Isaiah, Abram, Bjorn, Kyre, Luke, Konnor, Emery); seven great-grandchildren (Fisher, Everly, Raya, Remi, Braxton, Luna, Sophia). She is also survived by her brother Bill Terry (Sylvia) and sister-in-law Sharon Terry. She was predeceased by her parents Ada Fisher Terry and Waldemar Terry, grandchildren, Natalie Bailer, Noah Thomas, great-grandson Luca Helton, sister Lorraine Hartley, brother Leroy Terry.
Barbara’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Vista Village for the care they provided for our sweet mother. A special thank you to Hayden who provided exemplary care for mom and guided our family through the many changes that came along the way. Barbara’s family also wishes to recognize and express our appreciation for Angela Nelson who was a loving friend and gentle caregiver to our mother until the very end. Our family could not have navigated through this without these two amazing women.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery, Pincher Creek. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society, Alberta Division.
