Obituary of Terryl Lee McCaughley

May 4, 1945 - Calgary, Alberta

February 1, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Terryl McCaughley, left this world peacefully on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at the age of 77 years.

She will be forever loved and remembered by her husband of 56 years, Robert, sons David (Candace) and Daniel (Mandy); grandson Mason, life-long friends Brian and Christine Himmelreich; as well as many other family members and friends.

Terryl is remembered by her family and friends for her kind heart and caring nature, as well as her strength and resiliency. She was born on May 4, 1945, in Calgary, Alberta. Even as a child, everyone who knew Terryl knew she was a special person. A fond memory from childhood that she often spoke of was when she was chosen (for her character and values) to meet, and get her photo taken, with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Terryl was raised with a strong faith that was unwavering and guided her through her entire life. She was a devoted, lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In July of 1967, Terryl met Robert while she was working as a telephone operator; they hit it off instantly. They especially enjoyed spending time together hiking and camping at Dutch Creek. They married ten years later with David and Daniel following. Through the years that the boys were growing up, they had many family adventures. Cherished memories of these include spending summers at Gull Lake at the trailer, taking day trips to the mountains to go fishing, and doing activities the boys loved, such as playing countless hours of Lego. Terryl was incredibly proud of her sons. She instilled hard work, determination, and perseverance in them, and as they grew up and embarked on their careers, she loved hearing about all of their projects.

Terryl was a compassionate and selfless person, which is evident by the 35 years that she dedicated to being a foster parent. She provided a loving and safe home for dozens of children and left an immeasurable mark on the lives of so many.

When she retired as a foster parent in 2015, Terryl had more time to dedicate to her many hobbies. She was very creative and skilled at many crafts, including embroidery, ceramics, and painting. In the last few years, Terryl started gardening and discovered she had a green thumb. She loved sharing these passions with her loved ones, especially with her grandson Mason. She made him beautiful paintings and crafts. Mason also loved going out to the garden with Nana to find the biggest tomatoes and cucumbers and learn about how things grow.

Terryl will be incredibly missed and the memories she created will be remembered by all who knew her.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
