It is with great sadness that the family of Arthur Edward (Ned) Mifflin wish to announce his peaceful passing, at age 94, with his wife close by on Saturday, Jan 14, 2023 at the Josiah Squibb care home in Carbonear, NL.
Ned is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy (nee Little) of 72 years, sons; David (Brenda) of Grand Falls, Randy (Daphane) of Warkworth, ON, Edward of Ottawa, ON, Perry (Dallas) of Torbay, NL, Paul (Cathy) of Saint John, NB and Steven (Tammy) of Saint John, NB, grandchildren; Lorrie, Katherine, Matthew, Mitchell (Kristy), Alison, John, Emily and Alexandra (Darren) and great grandchildren; Max, Heather, Charlotte and Addison. He is predeceased by his parents Charles and Katherine, his brother Reginald (killed in action in WW2) and his sisters Beryl Bishop, Florence Misener and Isabelle Murchie.
Born in Bonavista, NL on Feb 18, 1928, Ned’s life was especially defined by a special gift of musical talent, his calling to be an educator and his life-long dedication to community service. His father taught him to play the fiddle at an early age and he was playing at dances by age 11-12. He played in many groups over the years including a local band in Bonavista called the Cape Shore Boys. In his later years he played with friends at senior’s homes, festivals and churches.
He was an educator for 33 years including schools at Bonavista, Appleton, Port Blandford and as the principal at St Peter’s Jr High School in Catalina. He was also a lay reader at St Peters Anglican Church for many years.
Over his lifetime Ned was a member of the Odd Fellows, the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner and was involved in various charities and fundraisers. He was a volunteer for the Navy League and for the Sea Cadets at Catalina. He especially enjoyed trouting, playing hymns with his father, playing music with his sons and friends, playing cards with relatives late on Saturday nights and spending time with family.
We wish to offer a special thanks to the staff of the Private Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion at Carbonear who provided loving care during Ned’s final years.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Ned Mifflin, memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer Society or to a charity of your choice and would be greatly appreciated.
The arrangements are through Strathie’s Funeral Home at Catalina for viewings at 2 – 4 PM and 7 – 9 PM on Monday, 16 Jan 23 and Tuesday, 17 Jan 23. A service and graveside burial will take place at a later date in July 2023.
