Obituary for
Anita Chenier (Jones)
The Chenier family is mourning the passing of Anita Chenier on Friday, June 9, 2023 at the age of 89. Anita will be remembered by her children Rhonda, Terry (Jane), and Kelly, and her grandchildren Jamieson (Justin), Sam, Nolan, Adam (Haley), Andrew, Jay (Kara), and Maddie. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Ray, her sister Mayme, and her mother and father Clara and Fenton.
Anita was born on May 15, 1934 in Eau Claire, Ontario, where her parents grew up on adjacent farms and raised their family. She met Ray Chenier one night walking home from her job at Northern Telephone when he spotted her across the street and deserted his friends so he could walk her home. It was love at first sight. Anita and Ray married in 1956 and built their lives together over 62 beautiful years until Ray passed away in 2018. Anita liked to say “family is everything,” and she lived up to that motto by devoting her life to her husband, children, and extended family. As a stay-at-home mom, she ran the Chenier household and shared her kindness, patience, and sense of humour with her children. Those virtues were passed down to the grandchildren who knew her as Nana and cherished every visit to her home and garden. You could always count on Nana for a sweet treat from her oven or dessert cupboard, slipped into your hand with a wink.
When it came to the domestic arts, Anita was a natural: she gardened, knitted, cooked, and sewed with ease, much to the delight of her extended family. A cottage on Kenogamissi Lake was her happy place when she needed a little break. Her big dinners were the highlight of every holiday, with recipes like her coleslaw and Christmas sticky buns often imitated but never duplicated. She loved to host well into her twilight years, and every visit meant an endless supply of snacks along with great conversation. Anita also celebrated every New Year in style, and everyone knew that when the clock struck midnight on December 31 it was time to give Nana a call. She rang in each New Year with messages from Timmins to Times Square. Her family will cherish those memories and will think of her wisdom, her wit, and her smile every day.
In accordance with Anita’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. In lieu of flowers, remembrance donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins. To make online condolences, please visit www.mironwilson.com
