February 2nd, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 264 Donwood Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
After a delay due to another illness within our family, we are finally and with great sadness, announcing the death of Alma Katheline Brown (Harrison) nee Martin on the morning of December 23rd, 2022 at the age of 92.
She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her daughter Janice Lee Washington (Stan); grandchildren Reid (Samantha) and Amber(Ryan); her sisters Ruth Champion, Lorna Clarkes, Mavis Berthelette, Sharin Zeigler and Margaret Martin; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Alma was predeceased by her first husband and father of her only child Janice, Kenneth Harrison; and second husband and love of her life Raymond A. Brown. She was also predeceased by parents Alice (Favel) and Norman Martin; siblings Don, George (infant), Keith, Dorothy, Norman (Bill), and John (Jack).
She was born on July 22, 1930 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba where she spent her childhood, moving with her family to Winnipeg. As a young teen, she attended St. Mary’s Academy and worked as a mother’s helper and nanny.
She then worked at Eaton’s in Payroll and then at Pioneer Grain Company until she and Ray married and they worked together in advertising, travelling across Canada for many years until Ray became ill and they were forced to give up their business.
She loved baking and her shortbreads and coffee cake could not be matched. She always strove to keep her mind sharp and she was alert until the end. Club Regent was a favourite place to go when she got older and she would play Scrabble with whomever she could get to play. She enjoyed Crosswords but only “the hard ones”. Her grandchildren were her absolute joy and she spent many weekends with them visiting, giving them tips on rollerblading, bike riding and learning times tables. She loved Vanilla ice cream, popcorn in the afternoons and watching Star Trek with Ray after supper.
Her motto was “a job worth doing is worth doing well” and she instilled this in her family.
Mom, Grandma, Alma was one of the most caring, loving, thoughtful and unselfish individuals you could encounter and her natural love and warmth made everyone feel comfortable in her presence.
She will be deeply missed by all and leaves a legacy of love, determination, willpower and strength.
Miss you and love you more than you will ever know. Until we reunite again.
