Obituary
ALMA MAY DOANE (nee Hunter), 93, of Brampton (Norval), Ontario, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2023, in Georgetown, Ontario. Predeceased by her husband of 66 years, James Doane, and her sisters Marion Marshall and Eileen McCutcheon. Loving mother of Anne (Ron Starret), Janice Doane, and John (Joan). Cherished grandmother of Jamie Starret, Rachelle (Levente Molnar), Devon Doane (Eddie Alves), Erin Doane, and Brett Doane (Matt Christofides). Dear great-grandmother of Emily, Jack and Daniel Molnar, and Gabriel Doane Alves.
Alma was born on October 5, 1929, to Albert & Myrtle Hunter and was raised on their farm on Winston Churchill Boulevard with her two younger sisters. She met James Doane at a Junior Farmers’ dance, and they were married on August 27, 1949. They built a house, and a life together at the corner of Wanless Drive and Heritage Road where they ran a small mixed farm of cattle, pigs, and chickens. Alma kept the chickens and had a thriving egg route for many years. James started his farm equipment business, James Doane Supply, in a small shop on the property and they started specializing in Charolais beef cattle. One of her proudest accomplishments was when they planned and built a new house for their retirement, on Heritage Road, next door to the original farm.
They were avid collectors of antiques and enjoyed many road trips in their van throughout Canada and the States in pursuit of the next collectible. A creative couple, there was never a moment when they weren’t working on a project. Both were active in the Ontario Chapter of the Doane Family Association and the Cast Iron Seat Collectors Association. Alma was a member of the Brampton Women’s Institute and an active member of the Ward 6 Ratepayer’s Association.
Alma was an accomplished artist and used her talent to decorate her home and to gift to family and friends. With a soft heart, there was always a grandchild, animal, or bird to be cared for in her home.
The family would like to thank the staff at Halton Hills Extendicare, Georgetown, for the care and kindness shown to Alma over the past year.
A Memorial service will take place at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Rd., north of Maple Ave., Georgetown, 905-877-3631, on Saturday March 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery, Norval immediately following the service with a reception in the Trafalgar Room upon return from the cemetery. I lieu of flowers donations to a charity of the donors choice would be appreciated.
