Obituary
Allen died February 24, 2023 at the age of 96. Allen was born on December 28, 1926, in Hamilton. Beloved husband, for 69 years, of Vera (Ross), who predeceased him in 2019. Al was the much-loved father of Patti Thomson (Al), Linda Thomson (Gary) and Jim Thomson (Laura) and adored grandfather of Eliza (Donald), Kate (Stew), Aaron (Kristan), Robyn (Dave), Danielle (Anthony) and Lauren (Chase). He was also Great-Grandpa to Jamie, Zack, Tessa, Claire, Kira, Sylvie & Cameron. Allen was the son of Raymond & Queenie (Truscott) Thomson. He was predeceased by his sister Shirley (Jim) Gibbon & brother Ronald (Pat) Thomson.
Allen was a dedicated and involved father. He enjoyed children, and loved making puzzles, and wooden toys and making sure the Easter Bunny showed up at family Easter dinners and at the homes of neighbourhood children. Curious and interested in the world, he had many volunteer roles in his life. He served as President of the Burlington Sertoma club where he worked hard to raise fun and funds in support of their service programs. He volunteered as a boy’s hardball coach, a Board Member of the Skyway Seniors Recreation club, an executive member of the Ontario Hydro Pensioners Association. and on the garden committee of his Seniors’ Residence. He & Vera enjoyed their varied travels.
In his working life, Al worked at Dynes Electric and later as an inspector at Ontario Hydro. Al loved his garden and spent many happy hours working in it, often with a beer nearby.
We are very appreciative of the care he received from the staff on 6S at Joseph Brant Hospital.
Visitation on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 2:30 p.m., followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate any donations made to Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada.
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children…to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. -Ralph Waldo Emerson
