Al was a remarkable man, very much loved by his family and very entertaining to work with.
Al was a one-woman man, he married Helen Marie O’Grady and lost her too soon, to cancer, in 1998. His daughter Debbie and sons David and John and all the Grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss him greatly. He was the rock and could fix most anything.
He started his Ambulance career in the early 50’s working for Len Klink, of Klink Ambulance and he brought his brother Bill to work with him. Al and Bill started their own business, Metro Ambulance in 1963 and it grew with an interesting cast of characters including me!!
Their wives, Betty & Helen, dispatched from their homes and raised kids at the same time. A feat our dispatchers do not have to contend with, while at work….thankfully.
In 1954 during Hurricane Hazel, Al’s ambulance carrying a pt was the last vehicle to cross the Lawrence Ave bridge over the Humber River before it was washed out!!
Eventually they ran 4 cars out of 3 stations!!
In 1968, the province set standards and basically all services were contracted to work for the province and were given an operating budget.
They learned, a balanced budget = budget cuts next year!!! Did not happen again.
By December 1975, all private services had to sell to Metropolitan Toronto. Al & Bill negotiated a price without a promise of supervisor jobs and went to work at 19 station (now a LRT station at Keele & Eglinton)
When Al retired he always kept busy with family and projects. He rebuilt a sweet 1937 Chevrolet Master Deluxe pick-up truck and Bill and Al travelled across Ontario showing it off!!
If you ever worked with him, I know you have a memory that brings a smile!!!
At this time, the family have not made any plans for a Celebration of Life, soon to come!!!
