Obituary of Alice Helen (Prendergast) Dearn, Halifax, Port Caledonia
It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Alice Helen Dearn, 92, passed away peacefully at the QEII Health Sciences Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Monday, January 23rd, 2023.
Alice was born on September 16, 1930 in Port Morien, NS. She was the youngest child of the late George and Alice (Burke) Prendergast. She was a long-time resident of Port Caledonia and recently of Parkland Senior Complex in Halifax, NS. Alice was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents Alice was predeceased by her loving husband William, son Ronald; grandson Terrence; sister Susan Nearing (Tommy), brothers John (Mabel), Patrick (Margie), George (Jeannette), Thomas, Dennis (Shirley), Michael (Isabel), and Fred (Christine) Prendergast.
She is survived by her daughter Susan (Terry) Howie, sons Robert (Rhodena) and Glen (Nancy). Nana loved her grandchildren dearly, Justin (Gail), Adam (Shantelle), Alison (Jason), Andrew (Katie), Kyle (Kristyn), Michael (Rebecca), Morgan and Jared and great grandchildren Caiden, Bella, Benjamin, Claire, Maria, Samuel, Matthew, Sadie, Henrik, Greta and Gabe, as well as many nieces and nephews. She held a special place in her heart for her nieces Sandra and Edie and nephew Greg who showed her great love and kindness over the years.
Alice was devoted to her faith and family. Her family was her greatest joy. She was a woman of unwavering strength and compassion. She was a loving and gentle woman who loved baking, gardening, birdwatching and cups of tea with family and friends. Great times were had at her cottage on the Mira River. Alice was a faithful member of St. Mary’s and St. Gregory’s Parish.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Glace Bay.
The funeral mass will be held in St. Mary’s Church in Port Morien with the time to be announced. Donations in her memory can be made to a charity of your choice or by completing a simple act of kindness toward another.
