Wayne Rice peacefully passed away April 6, 2023 at the Lennox & Addington County General Hospital in Napanee after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. He was 74 years old. He is survived by his two children, Jamie and Alyson, and predeceased by his wife, Peggy.
Born in 1948, Wayne grew up in Scarborough and attended the University of Guelph and University of Toronto. He then began a teaching career at the brand new Bath Public School in 1972. He spent most of his career as a math or science teacher at Napanee District Secondary School where he often coached soccer. The final phase of his 30+ year career in education was as vice principal at each of Ernestown Secondary School, North Addington Education Centre, and Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute.
In retirement, Wayne continued to participate in the community. In particular, he enjoyed volunteering with the Tamworth and District Lions Club and with the L&A County Hospital.
Wayne’s interests and hobbies varied. He raced motorcycles before starting to teach. He enjoyed hunting and fishing although judging by results, his kids figured he just enjoyed being outside in nature alone. He was a hobby handyman and woodworker. He travelled frequently, whether driving country backroads in the area, bus trips he’d help Peggy organize or further afield in search of sun and ocean. He almost always had a camera in his hand, whether at family functions or while on his travels.
Jamie and Aly are hugely appreciative of his “neighbour family” who have provided so much support over the years when they haven’t been in the neighbourhood.
The family will receive friends at Wartman’s Funeral Home in Napanee from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm on Monday, April 24, 2023. A small funeral service will follow at St Anthony’s of Padua Catholic Church in Centreville at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. Interment in the Parish Cemetery.
