Bernice Champagne
1934-2023
Bernice Marie Champagne, 88, of The Glades passed
away Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at the Moncton Hospital.
She was a daughter of the late Louis and Emma
(Cormier) Garnier. Bernice was a born and raised Newfoundlander who
had a keen sense of humour, wit and grit. Bernice and her husband
Hubert (the love of her life) were an inseparable team. They moved to
the farm and built what was known as B.J. Tomato Farm or Champagnes
tomatoes. Mom was well known at the Farmers Markets where she and dad
sold tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, chicken parmigiani and steak
sandwiches. Mom and dad were known as the Tomato/Cucumber couple, they
entertained their customers with their humour and bantering. Mom was a
great cook and baker, she loved to knit and cribbage tournaments with
dad were a daily event. Mom was a formidable personality; she left a
lasting impression wherever she went. It was such a gift to have her
with us over Christmas and in such fine form.
Survived by daughter Wanda Marie Mayfield (Ralph),
Anagance Ridge; brothers Alphonse Garnier, NS and Lew Garnier
(Caroll), ON; grandchildren Benjamin Mayfield (Erica), Chad Mayfield
(Joline) and Melissa Brown (Jason); great grandchildren Abbygail
Mayfield, Cody Mayfield, Tyson Mayfield, Caleb Mayfield, Connor Brown
and Kolten Brown. Predeceased by her husband Hubert Champagne;
granddaughter Allyson Marie Mayfield and siblings Geraldine, Leona,
Josephine, Jenita, Melvin and Louise.
Thank you so much to our dear friends and family
who prayed, visited and encouraged her and us along the
way.
Thank you to all the staff of Dow Quality Home
Care who made it possible for mom to live in her own home until four
and a half months ago. Mom loved all the girls who were with her,
especially those with her the last four years.
Huge Thank you to the Jordan Life Care staff, she
was so happy with you all, she felt your love and loved you
all.
Last but definitely not least, thank you to Dr.
Morton, Dr. Blanchard and the wonderfully kind and compassionate
palliative care team at the Moncton City Hospital. You made her
journey so much easier.
There will be no funeral service as per
mom’s request. A private family gathering will be arranged
to celebrate her life at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of
Salisbury Funeral Home (372-4800).
Donations to Heart, Kidney, Cancer or charity of
your choosing is much appreciated.
