Claude Harvey Daggett
1937-2023
With great sadness and wonderful memories, we announce the
passing of Claude Harvey Daggett (born May
13th, 1937). Claude passed away peacefully at
the Grand Manan Hospital on April 7th, 2023,
surrounded by the love of his large family, after a brief battle with
cancer.
Claude is survived by his beloved wife, Helen (nee Tatton);
his two daughters, Crystal (Frank) Russell and Amy (Bev) Fleet of
Grand Manan; his two sons, Alex (Joanne) Daggett of Quispamsis and
Andrew (Tara) Daggett of Montague, PEI; and his sister, Bonnie (Allen)
Benson of Saint John. Claude was predeceased by his three brothers,
Russell (Ida) and Layne (Helena) of BC; and Billy (Linda) of Grand
Manan.
The second son of Earle and Della Daggett, Claude grew up on
King Street in Seal Cove, where he also raised his own family. After a
few years working in the bank, Claude realized he was an outdoorsman
and took up a career at sea. He captained several vessels including
the M.V. Capelco, a lobster carrier he helped to design, which carried
lobsters as far away as Newfoundland. For the last twenty years before
his retirement, Claude was manager of the Connors Brothers sardine
factory in Seal Cove. Claude and Helen were blessed with 65 years of
marriage and 25 years of retirement together, in which they enjoyed
their Miller’s Pond cottage, travelled overseas, and
wintered in Florida.
An avid Red Sox fan, Claude never missed a baseball game, or
a chance to discuss the highlights afterward. He enjoyed playing golf,
and he loved fishing. His family have great memories of
‘casting a line’ in the pond with Grampy D, as
Claude was called by his grandkids.
Claude was a family man at heart, and he took great delight
in his 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, whom he prayed for
daily. Claude was a master storyteller, and his wit, wry humour, and
easy-going nature were enjoyed by family and friends of all ages. A
true gentleman, he was known for his kindness and diplomacy. His
selflessness and love for his community served him well as chairman of
the Grand Manan School Board and the Hospital Board, and president of
both the Rotary Club and the local branch of Gideons International.
Claude’s strong faith in God shone through to everyone he
knew, and he served for nearly 50 years as a deacon of the Seal Cove
Baptist Church.
Claude’s family wish to thank all of those who were
by their side and expressed acts of love during this difficult time.
The food, cards, messages, and prayers are so appreciated. A special
thanks as well to the Grand Manan Hospital staff for their kindness
and their patience with so many visitors.
A celebration of Claude’s life will be held at the
Seal Cove Baptist Church on Sunday, April 16th,
2023. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm,
followed by the service at 1:00 pm. A private family committal will be
held at the Hillside Cemetery. Donations can be made to Charlotte
County Cancer or Gideons International, or to a charity of the
donor’s choice.
Grampy D, we were in
your arms for a while. You will be in our hearts forever.
