Obituary
Mary Murphy (nee DeBrabandere), born in Belgium in 1944, passed quietly while surrounded by family at Stratford Hospice Rotary Perth. Known as Mom, Mary, Grandma, GrandmaDere, and Mierma. She was a kind-hearted soul who loved deeply and cared greatly. Mary was a nurse by both profession and vocation. She enjoyed a career spanning from obstetrics to community nursing. She was an early advocate on the steering committee for Stratford Hospice. As an active community member, Mary volunteered her time with Stratford Summer Music, Friends of the Festival, and L’Arche.
Mary showed her love through food. Her homemade jams were coveted by family and friends. Her baking was renowned, and you knew she loved you when she made her secret recipe cake on your birthday.
A gentle rebel, she urged herself and others to look beyond the black and white into the brilliant panorama of one’s soul. Mary loved family, time with her grandchildren, beautiful music, and was often the person who pulled people together. Beloved for her grace and charm, Mary’s favourite inner thought was “gently speaks my soul.”
Mary is survived by her children Julianna (Beth), Chris (Shawna), Richard (Val), and Pascal (Sarah), her grandchildren Chelsea, Jaedon, Kolten, Finnigan, Landon, Annan, Breanna (Kwesi), Joel, Alexis, her great grandchild Sunday, her siblings Rick (Gerta), Cathy (David), Anne (Albert), and Bob (Lou). Her godchildren, Sarah Jane, Yvonne, Rosemary, and Andy, always held a special place in her heart. Mary is predeceased by her parents Margaret and Jules, and her two brothers Robert and Pascal.
A celebration of life Mary’s will take place at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St, Stratford on Saturday, April 15th at 2pm, followed by a reception from 3-5pm.
