It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Butch Normand on December 10, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on July 2, 1947, in Edmonton, he lived there for most of his life. His unexpected departure due to cardiac arrest has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him.
He leaves to grieve his loss his wife, Diane; his son, Marty; and his daughter, Danielle. He also held a special place in the hearts of his brothers -in- law, Mark and Peter Coventry.
Butch was predeceased by his mother, Yvonne Breault and many relatives and friends.
After completing his education at College St. Jean followed by the University of Alberta, Butch embarked on a fulfilling career as a computer programmer. His colleagues revered him as ‘Mr. Fix It,’ a testament to his exceptional problem-solving abilities. When faced with a particularly challenging issue, it was a common refrain in the office to simply “ask Butch,” knowing that he would inevitably find a solution.
Later in his life Butch joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he formed many close relationships that enriched his spiritual life. He served the church with great commitment and devotion.
Butch was a natural athlete and excelled in every sport he participated in which were many. His friends and family fondly remember his competitive spirit. In his later years, Butch discovered a passion for pickleball, a sport where he earned the nickname “The Wall” for his seemingly impenetrable defense. His presence on the court was as much a display of his athletic prowess as it was an opportunity for camaraderie.
Those who knew Butch will remember a man of integrity, a pillar in his community, and a friend who could always be counted on. His absence will be deeply felt at family gatherings, in the pews of his church, and on the pickleball courts, where his laughter and gentle teasing were as much a part of the game as the serve and volley.
As we say farewell to Butch we do so with grateful hearts for the time we shared with him. We celebrate a life lived with purpose, faith, and joy, and we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us in the days to come. Butch’s story does not end here; it lives on in the memories we treasure and the love he gave so freely. Rest in peace, Butch.
Butch’s memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral home, 9 Muir Drive St. Albert, AB T8N 1G1.
