It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Wayne Alexander in his 81st year. (David) Wayne was
born in Trenton, Ontario in 1942 and raised by hard working parents Maude (Wing) and Keith Alexander
who worked at the local cotton and creosote factories, respectively.
As a young lad, Wayne spent countless hours at a family farm and cottage near Brighton, hanging out
with his cousin Larry Alexander and their friend Gary Whitley. They spent summers waterskiing, racing
box-carts, boating and fishing in Lake Ontario. The trio were the tightest of friends.
After graduating from Trenton High School in 1960, Wayne put himself through a Bachelor of Science in
Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University. He was an active student at Queen’s including playing
saxophone as part of the Queen’s Bands and organizing the Science ’64 “Science Formal”. It was at
Queen’s where he met his future wife, Jane Trussler. Upon graduation, he joined the Queen’s MBA
program and graduated with the MBA ‘66 class. He was the first generation in his family to attend
University.
Wayne started his career at IBM in 1966 in Montreal. Jane was working in Toronto teaching Phys-Ed
and would spend weekends riding the train to Montreal. In those fun “pre-kid” days they spent their
winter weekends at Mont Sutton in the “Der Alpen Traum Ski Shack” with close friends. Settling down
in Montreal and the arrival of sons Greg and Randy eventually put an end to the ski shack, and forced
the necessary sale of his ‘67 convertible Camaro.
In 1976, Wayne and Jane bought a cottage on Belmont Lake where the family continues to spend
summers. Their time in Montreal ended in 1977, with IBM moving the family to Toronto, then eventually
Winnipeg where Melissa was born in 1980.
Settling in Unionville after Winnipeg, Wayne embarked on a successful career with IBM in the banking
sector, taking early retirement in 1994. He continued to consult in the industry after IBM, including at
DMR and eventually his own firm Cloudspin, but eventually found that his dream contract was tough to
find: One that didn’t interfere with ski season or summers at Belmont Lake.
Wayne and Jane embedded themselves in the Unionville community, and were active members of the
Unionville Tennis and Curling Clubs, as well as local squash clubs. Wayne volunteered with Habitat for
Humanity helping with construction of new homes, coached Ringette when Melissa was a player, and
would generally be ready to take on a volunteer role whenever a good spreadsheet was needed to sort
out an event.
Wayne had a drive for projects and activities matched by few. Scoring ‘first tracks to the last ride up’ on
the ski hill was the expectation for many legendary family ski trips, and tackling implausible projects like
jacking up a massive fallen oak tree were the norm. A keen sailor, he taught his kids and grandkids to
sail on a 16’ Albacore, a gift to his bride on their engagement, that still sails Belmont today 55 years
later. Wayne could make anything out of wood, from pepper grinders to docks, and the cottage sauna
he designed and built in 1985 (powered by hot rocks from the bonfire) is still a favourite activity for his
extended family.
He will be missed as a great husband, father, uncle, cousin, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife Jane, and children Greg (Kristine), Randy (Lizette) and Melissa (Rick), and
grandchildren (Madeline, Lauren, Liam and Kyle).
A celebration of life will be held in the coming months.
As a family we received amazing support from the Alzheimer’s Society. In lieu of flowers, we ask that
you consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society to support their great work.
