Anne Bridget Shannon passed away at Royal Columbia Hospital in New Westminster, B.C., Canada on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the age of 81 years.
Born in Limerick, Ireland, on August 30, 1943, Anne attended school in Limerick at St Mary’s National before leaving to train as a Registered Nurse in London (Kensington), England.
During nursing school, Anne met her husband, Raymond Noel Shannon and, once married, left to pursue career opportunities in British Columbia, Canada in 1966. Anne’s nursing career in Canada began as an operating room nurse at Campbell River Hospital, followed by the Alder Medical Centre, before providing nursing services at Yucalta Lodge long-term care facility in Campbell River. In the late 1980’s, Anne became actively involved with the British Columbia Nurses Union (BCNU), initially as Regional Chair of Vancouver Island and then as Vice President of BCNU until she eventually retired in 2008.
Anne loved spending time with family and especially her grandchildren Connor and Kelsey. She enjoyed her time gardening and relaxing on long summer evenings with a glass of wine enjoying the ocean view at her home in Comox.
Anne is survived by her husband Raymond Noel Shannon of Comox, B.C., Canada, her son Mark and his wife Nancy, two grandchildren, Connor and Kelsey of Vancouver, B.C., Canada, sisters Marie of County Galway, Ireland, Carmel of Connecticut, USA, Deirdre and Vera of Limerick, Ireland, and brothers Brendan, Frankie and Michael of Limerick, Ireland, and Gerard of County Clare, and many nieces and nephews.
A service in celebration of Anne’s life will take place at St. Munchin’s Church at 11:00am followed by the funeral at Mount Saint Lawrence Cemetery on December 18, 2024 in Limerick, Ireland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Anne’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada (alzheimer.ca/en). The family would like to extend their love and appreciation to the many friends and family that have supported them during this difficult time.
