It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Leslie Dopking, 82, on November 11, 2024, in Kingston, Ontario.
Gord was born in Belleville, Ontario, to Pearl and Arthur Dopking on March 22, 1942. He was raised alongside his younger sister, Marie, on a farmhouse in Trenton, Ontario. At a young age, Gord learned the hard work of a farmer. He often told tales of working in cold rubber boots, rising early in the morning to do chores before school, and then working long after the sun had set. His childhood prepared him to become a master ‘fixer’ of all things and one who valued the land.
Not one to be excited for public school, Gord got through the days with a few pranks and some special, lifelong friends. In high school, he met Marlene Matter, the new girl in town, who moved from Kamloops with her family. Gord and Marlene married after high school and started their lives together in Kingston. Gord secured a job at Dupont where he worked for over 35 years. Gord greatly enjoyed his friends from work and his connections to his neighbours.
Gord valued time with his family. He was a doting father to his daughter, Lori, for 20 years. He was a constant guide to his son, Geoff, and daughter-in law, Melissa. He was the best Papa to Gavin and Mac. His family will deeply miss Gord’s ‘larger than life’ presence but will always cherish their memories together, such as waterskiing, sailing, gardening, and travelling. He will especially be missed by his wife, Marlene, as they were best friends and soulmates for over 62 years.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Cardiac Sciences Department at KGH, who provided exceptional care and welcomed Gord’s great sense of humour during his final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston on Saturday, November 30th, 2024, at 10am. Please enter at the rear Reception Centre doors. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Liver Foundation.
