Georgii Mikula Obituary
Georgii Katharina Irene Ashelm Mikula
MIKULA, Georgii Ashelm passed away at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on 30th October 2024, surrounded by her family, after a brief battle with leukaemia.
Born in Berlin on 17th June 1939 to her British mother Irene and her architect father Rolf, her earliest years were scarred by the Second World War. To avoid a Nazi-prescribed baby name, her parents scoured books of ancestry to justify a non-approved name: she was consequently christened Georgii. As a baby, she was once propped on a train trunk concealing a family friend fleeing Nazism. She spent the war in the countryside near Konstanz, moving to Frankfurt when her father returned from Russian captivity in 1949.
After a trans-Atlantic period in the mid-1950s, the family permanently settled in Canada. She began a career in advertising and met her husband John Mikula in 1963, living in Toronto and subsequently Montreal. They had two children: Benn and Lynn.
She joined John in an entrepreneurial business adventure before moving to McGill University. There she administered the Department of History (and managed the attendant academic dramas) with a deft mixture of efficiency and wry good humour.
She was a stalwart contributor to many volunteer associations, even chairing parent committees whilst 8 months pregnant. Her love of choral singing reached its apogee in a performance of Bach’s Mass in B Minor as part of an amateur ensemble. She also was a tremendous support to many friends and neighbours in Peterborough. A lifelong dedicated dog owner, she was known for her brisk, determined walking pace. Having cared for John in his challenging final years, she derived great pleasure from travelling in North America and Europe. On city visits she was the knowledgeable historian before returning to her favourite locations, marked by wild oceans and wide landscapes.
The closeness of her family, undergirded as it was by her care and attention, provided considerable delight. She is survived by her son Benn (Camilla) and her daughter Lynn (Philip) and her grandchildren Katharine, Hilary and Blythe (from Nicole); and Luke, Ivor and Noel. She was a much-loved and active presence in all their lives.
A funeral service will be held at Highland Park Funeral Centre in Peterborough on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at 2:00pm, followed by a reception. Please see the livestream link on the Highland Park website. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation.
