Sister Jane Jochim, OSU (Prelate) was called into eternal life on October 21, 2024 at the age of 96 years.
Daughter of Kaspar and Apollonia (Feist) Jochim, she was born on July 5, 1928, the sixth of nine children and was baptized Elizabeth Antoinetta. She grew up on the family farm near Tramping Lake, SK and took her elementary grades at Prairie Mound country school. After two years of high school, she worked at the Union Hospital in North Battleford, where her admiration for one of the Sisters of Providence inspired her to respond to an inner prompting to enter religious life.
Being attracted to teaching, with some trepidation she joined the Ursulines of Prelate in 1951 at the age of 22 and upon entrance to the novitiate took the name Sister Jane. She made her First Profession of vows in 1953, completed her high school and made her Perpetual Profession in 1956. Following a year of Teachers College in Saskatoon, she taught for 19 years in Goodsoil, Fox Valley, Viscount, Prelate, Fort Nelson, B.C. and Swift Current.
In 1975 she and two other Ursulines opened a mission in Brazil where they served in pastoral ministry in five locations in the region of Saubara on the east coast of Bahia. Even with the challenges of learning Portuguese and ministering amid extreme poverty, Sister Jane stated that her seven years there were some of the best years of her life.
Upon her return to Canada she completed a Bachelor of Theology degree at Newman Theological College in Edmonton and then joined the Archdiocese of Edmonton Rural Catechetical Team. For 18 years she prepared and supported catechists in 17 parishes in the Red Deer Deanery. Many were the miles she drove on country roads!
Always ready for a challenge, she served on an Ursuline team that prepared catechists in Barbados and Venezuela in the summer of 1985 and in Latvia in the summer of 1995.
Following a sabbatical year in Nova Scotia and New Hampshire, she tutored students at St. Angela’s Academy at Prelate and then moved to North Battleford where she did sacramental preparation at St. Joseph’s Parish. She also volunteered at St. Mary’s School helping indigenous students in their reading programs.
In 2003 she enjoyed taking part in an Ursuline pilgrimage to Italy and France.
Health issues necessitated her move to St. Angela Merici Residence in Saskatoon 2004 where she continued her lifelong interest in spiritual reading and took up artwork. In 2023 she moved to St. Ann’s Long Term Nursing Home where she received excellent professional and compassionate care.
She will be remembered for her upbeat personality, her enthusiasm for ministry, her adventuresome spirit, her love of learning and her fondness for butterflies.
She was predeceased by her parents, immediate family members: Barbara (Joe Schaun), Magdalen (Mike Hoffart), Sr. Regina, OSU, Kay (Tony Heit); brothers John and Nick (Betty) and brother-in-law Joe Ganzert.
Her memory is deeply cherished by her Ursuline Sisters, her sister Tillie, brother Kasper (Joan), sister-in-law Lillian, all their families, especially Kathy Windjack, her devoted niece, also friends and former students.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, 222 Willow Street, on October 31, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
Interment at Prelate Cemetery will take place at a later date.
